What is biometrics?

• All biometric traits have some physical attributes

Why use biometrics?

• Traditionally
• What you have keys, badges, ID cards
• What you know username/password, PIN,
  combination, personal info. (SSN, DOB, etc.)
• BIOMETRICS
• What you are
• Convenience (cant lose it or forget it)
• Helps combat identity theft, workplace fraud,
  etc.

What are biometric downfalls?

• Privacy concerns biometric traits are publicly
  known
• Butknowing the biometric is often irrelevant
  because it must be captured live
• Unauthorized use functionality creep (medical
  data)
• Combated by prohibitive federal laws and policies
• Biometric crimes kidnapping and theft of body
  parts. Spoofing or faking biometrics traits.
• Liveness detection (pulse, heat, conductivity,
  pupil dilation)
• Monitored collection and entry points

  undergraduate biometrics degree in the US, and
  the first ever to establish a biometrics program.
