Formatting your Essays - Guidelines

• Using Microsoft Word to format your essay
  according to MLA guidelines

Page Setup

• Controls the overall look of page
• Click File
• Click Page Setup (if not present, click little
  double arrows at bottom of drop down menu)
• Set margins to 1
• Click OK

Line Spacing Selecting Text

• Select text to be spaced
• Use Ctrl A to select all the text, or
• Drag the mouse over sections you want to change

Line Spacing Double Spacing

• Click on Format ? Paragraph, or rt. Mouse click
  and choose Paragraph.
• Select Double under Line Spacing drop down menu

Page Numbers Inserting

• On Page One, Choose Insert ? Page Number
• Choose Top of Page
• Choose Right
• Deselect Show Number on First Page

Page Numbers Adding Name

• Scroll to Page Two, Find Number 2 at top of page
• Double Click quickly on the 2. Header/Footer
  window should appear.
• Move mouse as close to number as possible. Single
  Click.
• When field turns grey, type your last name and a
  dash, followed by a space.
• Click Enter.

Works Cited Page Hanging Indent

• On works cited page, select your sources (see
  selecting text above)
• Click on Format ? Paragraph, or rt. Mouse click
  and choose Paragraph.
• In the special box, choose hanging

Block Quotes

• Using the above described skills, you can now
  block quote.
• Select the long quote.
• Click on Format ? Paragraph, or rt. Mouse click
  and choose Paragraph.
• Increase the indentation to .5
