NCE Parent Teacher Organization
North Columbia Elementary PTO welcomes new and
returning parents to a wonderful 2007-2008 school
year. This promises to be an exciting year for
the parents and students alike. The PTO is the
Parent Teacher Organization. We are parents just
like you who volunteer our time to enhance the
educational experience of every child in our
school. By joining PTO you are simply showing
support for your child's school. If you have a
desire to be involved in your child's school,
then you are more than qualified to be a PTO
member/volunteer. If you have any questions or
would like more information on North Columbia
Elementary PTO, please contact me or any one of
the officers. Shaw BradfordPresident NCE PTO

APPRECIATIONS A loud and thunderous applause
goes to the volunteers and teachers for all the
hard work on the Carnival last month. What a
great time! We could tell by all the smiling
faces that visited the PTO Concession that the
Carnival was a blast and the food was great. We
want to take this time to appreciate the teachers
for working the booths. All attempts to get
support from Fort Gordon failed due to
deployments but the teachers and volunteers
stepped up and made it an enjoyable time.
We want to thank the volunteers who helped out on
the games and the PTO concession booth. We
couldnt have done it without you. We need to
thank our Bike Riders. What an awesome display
from them and the Columbia County Motorcycle
Police. A new idea for the Carnival was a
success. We invited Wesley King and Darryl James
to come and make homemade Ice Cream and Charles
Dorn to boil Peanuts for us and everyone enjoyed
it. Mr. Benny Dorn, Paul Brown and Mike Simons
out did themselves running the grill. These Men
volunteered their time for the good of the
school. We also cannot forget that the Carnival
would not have been so successful without the
hard work of Wisteria Hill Plantation. The
teacher Birthday celebration was a success. The
company A Piece of Cake out did themselves in
presentation and taste. It must have been
delicious due to the fact that it was devoured
within minutes. We would like to thank Marie
Stewart and Marianne Bradford for their efforts
in this event. Its important to keep our
teachers spirits high. Even at the cost of their
waistlines.
From the PTO Officers As we continue to move
closer to the end of the year, things are going
to start to slow down but we as members need to
use that time to our advantage. We have been
thinking about ideas for after the first of the
year and if any of our members want to make a
suggestion, we are open to ideas. We are
also talking about improvements for next year.
One idea is for parents who will have children in
North Columbia Elementary next year to join PTO
at the end of the school year instead of putting
undo stress on the beginning of next year. There
are so many areas that require money at the
beginning of school that we dont want anyone to
be overly stressed when its not necessary.
Your comments and ideas are always welcome.

LETTER TO THE VETERANS AND THEIR
FAMILIES What a fine day to be a Soldier and
a fine day to be a Veteran! Fighting to defend
this Nation! The Parent Teacher Organization
(PTO) wants to express our sincere appreciation
for what you are doing and for what you have
already accomplished. Although your mission is a
success you continue to fight for our freedom.
Some Soldiers are active duty and some are former
military. One way or another, you are paving a
road for others to follow. Because of you, our
families are safe and America is strong. Thank
You for your sacrifices and your dedication.
This community is a Military Community. There
are few families in our school having no
relations with the military but most have family
members and friends associated with it. There is
a large number of retired military in our
community. The sacrifices made by each and every
soldier live in each one of us and our children.
While on active duty, a large number of veterans
have given up the opportunity to see their kids
grow and change. Veterans everywhere have
stories of missing their own childs birth or
missing several years of their childs life.
Some Soldiers have been sent to war saying
Goodbye only to hope they return to see their
families again. Some gave the ultimate sacrifice
and gave their lives defending freedom. Its
true, our lives revolve around our families.
We cannot say thanks to the Veteran without
saying Thank You to their families. Sometimes
its harder on the family than the Soldier. Its
difficult being left alone to carry the entire
weight of life. Its hard saying Goodbye to
someone you love not knowing if you will ever see
them again. There is tremendous stress wondering
if the person you love is alive or wounded in
action in a hospital somewhere all alone. The
families are left fighting a battle of their own.
Thank You for being there! Thank You
for your service!

Tell us what you think! Ask a Soldier ? I've
always wanted to know what it's like when you are
overseas, your family is here - are you able to
email/phone them now? I know during WWII letters
were the only way to communicate, but was
wondering about now. I can't imagine how much
you must miss them, no matter if you're able to
communicate better now or not. I appreciate all
military men and women, have the utmost respect
for you all, and get tearful just thinking about
what you all have done/are doing for us. ? Do
you think the Army is what the commercials make
it out to be? ? I would ask the following
questions ? What is the most difficult part
of your job as a soldier? ? What
factors in your life influenced you in making
the decision to serve your country in such
an admirable way? ? Have your
feelings about the United States being involved
in the war changed from the beginning of the war
to now? Tell Why? I do believe we are doing
something good over there, ? When you are away
from your family, what is the thing you worry
most about happening? (back home) ? What is
your favorite thing to do to pass your spare
time? (when you are in the field) What book are
you currently reading? ? Are you afraid when
you have to go off to war? ? How do you stay
connected with your children, wife, and family
when you are stationed overseas? How do you stay
informed with what is going on with school
activities, etc.? ? Do you ever regret signing
up for military service? ? after serving your
time in Iraq, you knew you would get to come home
and pick up your life here in the states with
your family. Were you giving special instructions
by the military on how to make this transition
from war to home life, and if so, what exactly
were your told? In addition, what was the one
thing that helped you make that transition?
? I have asked a few soldiers now stationed at
Fort Gordon the above questions. I will run the
answers over the next several weeks. Keep
watching the PTO Web site for your answer!
