Fast routing switching of multiple
workgroup LANs, each with a 100Mbps or 1000Mbps
link into a central collapsed backbone

Network Management

ESnet
  • The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet)
  • A very high bandwidth ATM network funded by the
Dept. of Energy for support of its energy
    research programs
  • ESnet peers with other commercial research
networks at the major interconnection points in
    the country
  • ESnet supports (some) international links that
    have energy research support aspects.
  • ESnet acts as FNALs Internet service provider
  • All of the Laboratorys traffic to the commercial
    Internet goes via Esnet
  • Few FNAL Collaborators are on the ESnet backbone
ESnet is our transit network to their Internet
    provider.
  • Performance across ESnet tends to be excellent
  • Once your data gets off of ESnet, performance may
    degrade...

MREN
  • The Metropolitan Research Education Network is
    a Chicago-based advanced research network
  • MREN co-resides with the Chicago Network Access
Point (NAP), a major commercial internet
    connection point
  • MREN is an Internet-2 GigaPOP, with high
    bandwidth connections to Internet-2 backbone
    networks.
  • FNAL has an OC3 (155Mbps) MREN link
  • Used to establish direct network connections with
    other MREN members
  • Provides FNAL with an OC3 (155Mbps) connection to
    the Internet-2 network(s).
  • Performance is very good current utilization is
    low.

FNAL MREN

Internet-2
  • A consortium to form research network(s) that
advance development of the next generation
    internet
  • One objective is a high performance network for
    general research (ie., the pre-commercialized
    internet).
  • Another is to advance internet technology itself
  • No commodity internet traffic!
  • Univ A lt--gt Univ B via vBNS (Internet-2)
  • Univ A non-Internet-2 via commercial ISP
  • Universities need 2 Internet connections
  • The vBNS is the initial Internet-2 network
  • The Abilene network is just coming into
existence it may replace (or more likely
    augment) the vBNS.

International Connections
  • Level of connectivity general performance vary
    by the specific international trans-oceanic
    connection
  • ESnet peers with some national networks directly
  • CERN, FRG/WIN at Perryman, Maryland
  • INFN at Princeton.
  • Other national networks use commercial Internet
    service providers.
  • STARTAP
  • An international connection exchange, located at
    Chicago NAP
  • Japan-HEP now connected there CERN will
    reconnect there
  • Potentially means optimal connectivity to FNAL
offers the possibility of early network exotica
    deployment (QOS).
