Research the Topic and Audience
  • Grasp the Objective
  • When requested to speak, be sure to make sure
    that your understanding of the topic is THEIR
    understanding of the topic.
  • Research the topic thoroughly. This helps
    prepare for questions.
  • Interview the inviter if necessary
  • Know the audience
  • Formal (First Impressions Count!)
  • Informal
  • Students
  • Audit Committee
  • Understand the Type of Speech
  • Persuasive, Informative, Demonstrative,
    Commemorative, Other

Draft the Presentation
  • Outline the Major Points
  • Introduction (Tell them what you are going to
    say)
  • Body (Tell them)
  • Conclusion (Tell them what you told them)
  • Build in the Detail within each major point
  • Make the presentation appropriate for the
    audience
  • Not a 50 minutes presentation for what should be
    a 30 second elevator speech
  • Once completed, set it down for 48 hours, then
    revisit. This helps create distance.
  • Have someone else review it if appropriate.

Update as needed
  • Add/remove verbiage if needed.
  • Keep versions of your presentations in case you
    want to go back to something old
  • Keep the visual part of the presentation easy on
    the eye. If detail is needed, hand out
    additional documentation AFTER the presentation.

  • Dress Appropriately
  • Gum Im a clueless idiot
  • Use the restroom immediately before presenting
  • Make sure you are healthy. Postpone if you are
    ill (if possible).
  • Make sure your language is appropriate
  • Start with a story or an appropriate joke. This
    draws in the audience.
  • Let attendees know where restrooms are located
    and ensure electronic devices are stored.

  • Be sure to meet with the meetings chairman so
    they know you are there.
  • Check to make sure equipment works and is
    available
  • Have paper copies as a backup

  • Address your audience, not your shoes or the
    slides.
  • Speak clearly and slowly and with appropriate
    volume
  • Note If a Microphone is provided, use it.
    Sometimes presentations are recorded or off-site
    people will not be able to hear unless you speak
    through the microphone.
  • End conclusively!

  • Answer questions as succinctly as possible. Do
    not ramble.
  • If the question is beyond the scope of your
    topic, then state it.
  • Watch out for the Im smarter than you
    questions. Feel free to be direct, or offer to
    meet with person after meeting. They will almost
    always not take you up on this.
  • If needed, ask Why are you asking this question
  • If you do not know, then be honest, then offer to
    research and follow up. Then do it!
  • Repeat the question if needed (offsite audience
    or recordings)
  • Watch your time. Ask chairman if time for
    questions is available.

Improve your skills
  • After the presentation, think about how well you
    did.
  • Look for areas of improvement.
  • Keep a library of presentations that you can
    use for the future along with notes of what went
    well / not well.
