3Biography
- Born on January 15, 1929
- He was born as Michael Luther King, Jr. and then
changed his name to Martin. - His grandfather started the familys tenure as
pastor, then his father and then King followed.

- When King was in Boston he married Coretta Scott
and they had 2 sons and 2 daughters. - In 1954, King became the pastoral of the Dexter
Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery. - He was a member of the executive committee of the
National Association for the Advancement of
Colored People.

- During the days of the bus boycott, King was
arrested and his home was bombed but he became
known as a Negro leader of the first rank. - In 1957, King Jr. was elected president of the
Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an
organization created to provide new leadership
for the now increasing civil rights movement. - For 11 years King Jr. traveled to different
states where ever there was injustice, protest
and action and spoke to the people.

- King Jr. attended the Atlanta University
Laboratory School. - King Jr. was advanced to Morehouse College
without formal graduation from Booker T.
Washington. - Dr. King entered Morehouse when he was 15 years
old.

- In 1948, King Jr. graduated from Morehouse
College with a B.A. degree in Sociology. - Then he registered in Crozer Theological Seminary
in Chester, Pennsylvania. While attending Crozer,
he also studied at the University of
Pennsylvania.

- Later he was awarded a Bachelor of Divinity
Degree from Crozer in 1951. - In September 1951, King Jr. began doctoral
studies in Systematic Theology at Boston
University and later in 1955 he received his PhD.
- He also studied at Harvard University.
9His Family
Martin Luther King, Jr. was the first son but
second child born to Reverend Martin Luther King,
Sr. and Alberta Williams King. MLK Jr.s
brothers and sisters were Christine King Farris
and the Alfred Daniel Williams King. Martin
Luther King's maternal grandparents were Adam
Daniel Williams and Jenny Parks Williams. His
paternal grandparents were James Albert and Delia
King.
10He Believed In
Martin Luther King Jr. believed in human rights,
civil rights, equality, integration, non-violent
social change, peace, and justice for all.
11Speeches
- His lectures and comments encouraged the concern
and sparked the conscience of a generation the
movements and marches he led brought important
changes in the arrangement of American life.
Dr. King's concept of being a somebody gave black
and poor people a new sense of worth and dignity.

- "I have a dream that one day this nation will
rise up and live out the true meaning of its
creed 'We hold these truths to be self-evident,
that all men are created equal.'" - "I have a dream that one day on the red hills of
Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of
former slave owners will be able to sit down
together at a table of brotherhood." - "I have a dream that my four little children will
one day live in a nation where they will not be
judged by the color of their skin but by the
content of their character."
13His Death
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot on April 4,
1968. He was assassinated while standing on a
balcony of a motel. James Earl Ray was Kings
assassinator and was arrested in London, England
on June 8, 1968.

14National Holiday
- On November 2, 1986 a national holiday
- was announced in Kings honor.
