Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (
UETCL) is a public limited company and was
incorporated on 26th March, 2001 after the
unbundling of Uganda Electricity Board (UEB) into
three successor companies.

UETCL mandate

• Owns and Operates the High Voltage Transmission
  Grid (HVTG) above 33kV
• Co-ordinates the power supply system to achieve
• balance between supply and demand
• Responsible for dispatching generation facilities
• Bulk Power Purchase and Sales ( Single Buyer)
• Power Exports and Imports

Current Power Supply Status at Namanve

• The Kampala Industrial and Business Park (KIBP)
  is currently supplied by a 33kV line which
  originates from Lugogo substation some 10km away.
  The line supplies power to Coca Cola factory,
  Mukono and Nakifuma substations.
• The above line has limited capacity of 20MW and
  hence the need for construction a new substation
  near KIBP.

Namanve 3x32/40MVA, 132/33kV substation Project

• Following the degazetting of 894 hectares of land
  at Namanve for industrial development, studies
  funded by GoU and various development partners
  were conducted to determine the feasibility of
  the site for industrial park establishment.
• The studies recommended among others the
  construction of a 132/33kV substation to supply
  power to the proposed industrial park.

Project objectives

• Provision of adequate and reliable substation
  firm capacity to meet the requirements of KIBP.
• Improvement of security of power supply to the
  load centers of Kireka, Mukono and Nakifuma.

Project description

• The project involves the construction of a new
  132/33kV substation at Namanve near KIBP.
• The proposed scope of includes design, supply,
  installation and commissioning of the following
• i) 3 X 132/40 MVA,132/33kV Transformers
• ii) 2 X 132kV line bays
• iii) 2 X 132kV transformer bays
• iv) 3 X 33kV transformer bays
• v) 8 X 33kV line bays
• vi) 2 dead end towers
• vii) Civil works
• The Project is financed by IDA/WB and UETCL

Timeline For Project Implementation

Namanve 50MW Thermal Power Generation Project

• Objective
• To acquire a permanent thermal power plant to
  provide Hydro /Thermal generation mix and
  mitigate emergency situations.

Project Implementation

• UETCL has identified 3.8 Acres of land near the
  planned 132/33kV substation and is in the final
  stages of the procurement process.
• The project is being procured on a Build Own and
  Transfer (BOT) arrangement.
• Bids for the procurement of the project are in
  advanced procurement stages.
• The plant will be commissioned in Q4 of 2007
