  • Want to double resolution of ATM portion of
    CCSM3.0 (T85 to T170)
  • Horizontal resolution only, not vertical
  • gt4 times atm computation

  • Additional coupler load for interpolation and
    remapping in both directions to other components

  • gt4 times data transmission, storage, and post
    processing and Grid utilization
  • Looking at 320 ATM cpus, and 384(?) total, just
    to keep current simulation rate
  • Possible increases in ATM code efficiency
  • Separate physics and dynamics time steps
  • Reduced grid (fewer polar points)

  • Would like to quadruple CCSM3.0 ATM resolution to
    T340
  • WHY????
  • Desire to study regional climate
  • There are small-scale phenomena that affect
    regional climate that can only be represented by
    this resolution

  • But, use current model for estimation purposes
  • Even though possible with current ATM, probably
    will require different model including previous
    optimizations and (probably) new dynamical core.

    performance for similar number of cpus or trade
    offs using more cpus
  • AND, additionally, similar bump in
  • Data Pipes (width and transfer rate)

    Mechanics Program, but no quantitative computing
    resource requirements.
