9Epidemiologic situation (1)
- As of 17 May 2005 a total of 380 AFP cases were
reported
- The distribution by governorate is shown in
(Table 1)
- Out of the 107 AFP cases where the lab testing
was finalized, 66 were wild poliovirus type 1
positive and 41 negative
- These 66 positive cases are from
- Alhudaidah (51)
- Sanaa City (3)
- Hadramoat Almukalla (2) and Hadramoat Sayeun (6)
- Hajjah (1)
- Taiz (2)
- Rimah (1)
10Epidemiologic situation (2)
- In Hudaidah governorate Laboratory confirmed
polio cases were reported from 13 districts.
Almost all these cases were infected before the
April NID campaign (Table 2) - So far the spread in other governorates (Hajjah,
Sana City, Taiz, Hadramoat Sayeun, Rimah) is of
lesser extent, possibly due to the effect of the
NID (Table 4) - There is evidence of a decrease in number of
reported AFP cases after week 17 ending 24 April
(10 days after the first day of the NID), (Figure
1) - More than half the polio cases are less than 2
years and another quarter is 2-3 years old, those
above 5 are only 6 (Figure 2)
- Investigation of cases showed many of them come
from areas which were not covered during April
NID round, and over all campaign coverage figures
were below expectation. The number of OPV doses
received by about 70 of the cases was less than
4 cases (Figure 3)
11Important Recent Activities
- Government commitment at all levels is very high.
They are deeply involved in the investigation of
outbreak and in planning for the forthcoming
campaign on 30 May 2005. - In addition to WHO staff in Yemen, EMRO provided
10 more experts who are supporting surveillance
activities including Data management, planning
for the NID and training of vaccinators and
supervisors. - Microplanning is on-going in all provinces and is
expected to be completed this week.
- Training material already prepared and training
is on-going to be completed before the campaign.
- Efforts are on the way to assess financial
requirements for the campaigns and to secure the
necessary amounts to cover the gap remaining
after National inputs.
