• The eruption began on Sunday, October 1, on
  Jabal-al-Tair (Bird Mountain).
  
• The island is one of a number of volcanoes that
  extend from the Southern end of the Red Sea
  spreading zone.
  
• Except for a military base, the island is
  uninhabited.

• The eruption ejected ash more than 300 m (1,000
  feet) into the air.
  
• A portion of the Island collapsed.
• The rest was covered with lava that continued to
  flow.

  reported that the Island had been the center of
  seismicity during the past two weeks.
  
• Before Sunday, the magnitudes were in the 2 3.6

• The last explosive eruption on the Island
  occurred in 1983.,

NATO PROVIDES ASSISTANCE

• Six NATO ship provided immediate assistance and
  were able to rescue some who had attempted to
  evacuate.
  
• With the eruption occurring 115 km (70 miles) off
  the coast of Yemen, the ships remained in the
  area to be of further assistance, if needed.
