Title: Ecosystems: A unitedstreaming'com Demonstration
1EcosystemsA unitedstreaming.com Demonstration
The Lesson that follows was created by 3rd grade
teacher Robyn Wuthnow from Patrick Henry
Elementary in Arlington, VA. It demonstrates the
added value of integrating digital content into a
lesson.

3Your Goal
- Learn how living things in ecosystems need
each other in order to survive.
4Directions
- 1. View the slides.
- 2. Play videos when you are instructed to.
- 3. Go to the internet when you are instructed to.
- 4. Respond to all questions in your journal.
5What We Want to Know
1. What populations of plants and animals live
together?
2. How do plants and animals share limited
resources?
3. How do plants and animals need each other?
61. What populations of plants and animals live
together?
A community is a group of all the different kinds
of organisms living in the same area.
A population is a group of organisms of the
same kind living in the same area at the same
time.
7Biomes can help us understand ecosystems.
- A biome is a part of the world that has a certain
climate.
- Some places are hot, some are cold, some are wet,
and some are dry.
- Different plants and animals have adapted to
living each biome.
8Biome Research
- You are going to research the different types of
biomes. - Use your graphic organizer to record the
different plants and animals found in each biome.
- 2) Go to the next slide and watch the videos.
9Biome Videos
There are six main land biomes
Click on each picture below to play a video on
the biome.
Temperate
Rainforest
Tundra
Desert
Grassland
Taiga
10The Desert Biome
We will focus on the desert biome.
Click on the picture below to play the video.
112. What resources do plants and animals have to
share in the desert?
The desert has resources, but some are limited.
You will go to the web site below to research the
deserts resources. Answer these questions
- What resources can be found in the desert?
- 2) Which resources are limited in the desert?
- Click on this link to go to the web site

/deserts.html
12deserts are formed because of
limited resources?
Did You Know...
- As air moves up over a mountain range, it gets
cold and loses the ability to hold moisture -- so
it rains or snows. When the air moves down the
other side of the mountain, it gets warmer. Warm
air can hold lots of moisture, so it doesn't rain
as much. Deserts are formed when precipitation is
trapped in the warm air, and little rain falls to
the ground.
13How do animals survive in the desert?
- As you know, water is a limited resource in the
desert. - Intense heat, searing sun, and lack of water are
just a few of the challenges facing desert
animals.
- Desert animals have many adaptations.
- Some animals never drink, but can survive from
getting their water from seeds. Some seeds can
contain up to 50 water.
14Respond
- How much rainfall does the desert biome receive?
2. What is the difference in rainfall between the
desert biome and the biome in which you live?
153. How do desert plants and animals depend on
each other?
- You are now going to research plants and animals
at the Evergreen Biomes web site.
- At the web site, find at least one example of a
plant or animal that needs another organism in
order to survive.
- Record your example in your journal.
- At the web site, you will need to click on
desert plants or desert animals and click on the
ones you want to learn more about.

each other?

185. How are plants and animals important to the
desert ecosystem?

19Respond
Energy from the Sun
Producers
Consumers
Draw a food chain for plants and animals in the
desert.
20Take the Quiz
- Directions
- Try out your understanding of how plants and
animals need each other with this quiz. - Read the paragraphs.
- 2) In your journal, answer the questions in
complete sentences. -
21Desert Animal Addax
- The addax is a clumsy-looking animal. Addaxs
large, wide hoofs are adapted to walking on soft
sand.
Addax never drink water, but find all the
moisture they need from eating plants, such as
cactus. They wander from place to place. Where
they travel is closely linked to where the rain
occasionally falls. Addax have a special ability
to find the patches of desert plants that
suddenly sprout after a downpour.
22Respond
- 1. What limited resource does the addax share
with plants in the desert? -
2. How does the addax depend on plants in the
desert?
3. What would happen if there were no more plants
in the desert?
