The Rain ForestAn Animal Research Project
  • byMrs. Biedermanns Third Grade
  • Sageville School
  • Dubuque, Iowa
  • March 2005

2
ToucanSarah Schmitz
  • Toucans live in the canopy perched in the
    rainforest.
  • Toucans pluck fruits like berries and figs, but
    mostly small fruits.
  • Scientists are not sure why the bill of the
toucan is so big. It is strong and lightweight.
  • There are about 40 kinds of toucans. The largest
toucan is called the Toco Toucan, and the
smallest toucan is called the Aracaris.
  • When toucans go to sleep they turn their heads to
the side and lay their bills on their backs. Then
they fold their tails over to cover them up.
  • The toucans enemies are big cats, owls, man, big
    snakes, and harpy eagle.

KinkajouCarmen McDermott
  • The kinkajou lives in the rainforest trees of
South America, Southern Mexico Belize, Brazil,
and Ecuador, and also as pets.
  • The kinkajou is related to the raccoon , coatis,
ringtail cat, and perhaps the panda.
  • The kinkajou has hands similar to a human.
    However, there is no thumb.
  • The kinkajou is noctunral , and it eats honey,
eggs, greens, and insects during the night.
  • The kinkajous average height is two feet , and
there average weight is sin and one half pounds.
  • The kinkajous lifespan is twenty to twenty-five
    years.

4
The TapirClayton Hilby
  • Tapirs live by rivers in the rainforest.
  • Tapirs are plant eaters.
  • They dig up fruit, leaves, and other plants with
    their snout
  • The tapir is the largest native mammal weighing
    300 pounds to 600 pounds.
  • Its front foot has four toes and the hind foot
    has three toes.
  • Jaguars and people are their enemy.

5
SlothMichael Eyres
  • The sloth is almost the slowest animal in the
    rainforest.
  • The sloth lives mostly in the under story and a
    little on the forest floor.
  • Sloth live in trees and hang upside down.
  • The sloth swings from branch to branch.
  • At night the sloth slowly wakes to eat.
  • The sloth is really quiet.

6
TarsierLibby Butt
  • The tarsier lives in the canopy of the
    rainforest.
  • Their huge eyes make it a ruthless nighttime
    hunter.
  • The tarsier is a carnivore, it eats little
    animals.
  • Its body grows to be three or four inches to
    about six inches.
  • The tarsiers head can turn all the way around.

7
AnteaterNatalie Fischer
  • An anteater lives in South America on the
    rainforest floor.
  • Its wormlike tongue can reach two feet, and each
day the anteater eats thousands of insects.
  • The anteater measures about six feet from its
    head to its bushy tail.
  • Their enemies are jaguars, pumas, and humans.

8
SlothTrevor Tharp
  • Sloth can live for thirty years in the canopy of
the rain forests in South America.
  • Sloth eat fruit, leaves, buds and young twigs at
    night.
  • Sloth are extremely slow, so mold grows on them
    to camouflage them from predators.
  • Sloth give birth upside down and can stay upside
    down for eighteen hours.
  • Sloth are nocturnal animals and sleep during
    daytime.

9
Emerald Tree BoaRain Harlow
  • The emerald tree boa hangs from rainforest trees
and then sneaks up on passing animals.
  • This powerful snake curls up and crushes its
    victim before swallowing it whole.
  • After a large meal the boa may sleep for a week
    to five months without eating.
  • Its favorite meal though is a small mammal such
as a mouse or a possum.

10
Poison-Arrow FrogWill Davis
  • The poison-arrow frog of the Amazon Rainforest is
    also called the poison-dart frog
  • One frogs touch can kill 20,000 mice making the
    frog very protected. Wow!!!
  • If a bird tries to eat a poison-dart frog it will
spit it out in a hurry. The bird wont die, but
it will avoid tiny colorful frogs.
  • The mother frog lay six eggs not in a pond but on
    a leaf.
  • This tiny frog doesnt need to leap away from
    danger it has no enemies!

11
AnacondaBrady Breitbach
  • Anacondas live on the forest floor.
  • The anaconda is also known as the water boa.
  • Anacondas have teeth, but they arent a venomous
    snake.
  • Anacondas dont kill with their teeth, but they
kill by constricting (squeezing) their prey
until it can no longer breathe.
  • Anacondas are carnivores (meat-eaters) because
they eat pigs, deer, crocodile birds, fish,
    jaguars, and other animals.
  • The young anaconda is called a neonate.

12
Red-Eyed Tree FrogRandy Kauffmann
  • Red eyed tree frogs can be found in the trees of
    many rainforests.
  • Their toes help them climb up tall trees.
  • They have really long tongues to eat many insects
like flies, lady bugs, and ants.
  • Red eyed tree frogs do not move fast, they move
    slowly.

13
Giant EagleQuinn Wagner
  • Each rainforest has its own type of giant eagle,
in South America is the harpy eagle
  • Giant eagles catch monkeys, sloth and other large
pray in the canopy layer of the rainforest
  • Big cats like jaguars and giant eagles are the
    largest predators in the rainforest
  • The largest ever known ones are the New Zealand
    or the giant eagle
  • The giant eagles wing span measured up to three
meters and its talon claws were about 7.5 cm long!

14
JaguarMitchell Gibbs
  • Did you know that a jaguars scientific name is
    panther onca?
  • The biggest cat in South America is the jaguar,
it lives on the forest floor.
  • A jaguar is a predator , so it eats meat like
peccaries, rodents, fish, deer, and even turtles.
  • A jaguar would rather wait and pounce on its food
    than stalk it.
  • Jaguars have nearly died out because people are
    destroying its home.

15
YonomomiRobert Robey
  • Did you know that people live in the rainforest
    ?
  • Rainforest children do not have to go to school,
they learn from the tribe masters.
  • Many rainforest people paint their bodies for
    decoration.
  • A person in the modern world may live for
over 70 years, but few rainforest people
    survive more than 40 years.
  • Over eighty different tribes have died out
