History of the Region

• Area defined as the northwestern corner of the
  continental United States
• Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and parts of Wyoming
  and Western Montana
• Region was explored by Lewis and Clark in the
  early 1800s
• U.S.A claimed the land and the region was known
  as Oregon Country
• The area subdivided into territories were later
  admitted as states

People of the PNC

• Native Americans (Bella Bella, Chinnok, Makah,
  Nootka, Takelma, and many others)
• Lived in large wooden houses
• Warfare among tribes due to overpopulation of the
  region
• Best fishermen and boat builders
• Considered to be the wealthiest Native Americans
  in North America
• Held big parties for invited guests

• Dominated by several mountain ranges (Coast
  Ranges, Cascade Range, Rocky Mountains)
• Some of North Americas most extensive forests
• Plentiful rainfall allows for hydroelectric power
• Major cities of the Pacific Northwest began as
  seaports, supporting logging, mining, and farming
  industries
• Now they are major technological and industrial
  centers
• Cascadia Proposed name for a nation uniting all
  or part of the Pacific Northwest
