History
  • In the 5th century Slovak Tribes began to settle.
  • By The 9th century they lived in a loose
    confederation, known as The Great Moravian
    Empire.
  • After an invasion in 907 by the Nomadic Magyars
    (ancestors of todays Hungarians) The Slavic
    region became ruled by the Hungarians.
  • In the 14th century Prague became a cultural and
    political capital that rivaled Paris.
  • When the Hapsburg Empire ended at the end of
    World War I Czech and Slovak lands were united to
    form a new Czech-Slovak state.
  • The first president was Tomas Masaryk.
  • In 1939 all of Czechs land was taken over by
    Hitler and the Germans.

Climate
  • Summers are moderate, but high temperatures are
    rare, but may occur in July.
  • Winters are often cold, with snow in the
    mountains. Temperatures are usually below
    freezing.

Geography
  • The Czech Republic covers 30,450 miles. It is
    just smaller than South Carolina.
  • There are three geographic regions Bohemia,
    Moravia, and Silesia.
  • Bohemia is roughly two thirds of the country.
  • Moravia is nearly one third of the eastern
    portion.
  • Silesia is a small area in the northeast near the
    Polish border.
  • Mountain ranges nearly surround the county.

    Russian.

    than a joke. Jokes are parables commonly used in
    conversation.

    stating opinions or wishes.
  • They emphasize conformity and cooperation.
  • Young people are encouraged to belong to
    organizations.
  • Anyone who performs a job is well admired.
  • European fashions are common, young people wear
    latest styles. Jeans and t-shirts are popular.
  • They will usually be more casual, like a man
    would wear a sports jacket instead of a suit to
    work.

  • The crops they grow are Wheat, Hops, Sugar
    Beets, Potatoes, Barley, Rye, Onions, and Fruit.

    Equipment, Motor Vehicles, Glass, and Armanents.

  • Sixty percent of the country is Christian.
  • Thirty-Nine percent Catholic.
  • Forty percent Atheists.
  • Many of the people are protestant.
  • Sometimes their beliefs are more from heritage
    rather than belief.

Holidays
  • They celebrate New Years Day, Easter Monday, The
    End Of World War II (May 8th), Cyril and
    Methodiuss Day (July 5th), Jan Hus Day (July
    6th), Founding Of The First Republic (October
    28th), Velvet Revolution Day or Fight For Freedom
    (November 17th) Democracy Day, and Christmas
    (December 24th-26th).
  • Christmas Eve is the most important part of
    Christmas.
  • The people will eat carp for dinner in honor of
    their Catholic heritage. They also eat vánocka, a
    fruit bread, in the days leading to Christmas.
  • On New Years they give each other small candies
    or paper cards in the shape of pigs for good
    luck.
