Freshwater Fish in Michigan
  • There are many types of different species of fish
    that live in Michigan waters.
  • Many of these fish vary in both their size and
    their appearance.
  • As well as fishs characteristics, they can also
    be identified by the way they act.

Northern Pike
  • One of the most fierce fish in freshwater
  • Very long and slender
  • Identified by its dark body with yellow spots and
    large teeth
  • Mainly feeds on other types of fish

Largemouth Bass
  • Opportunistic feeder (hunts when food is around)
  • Prefers warmer water around weeds lily pads
  • Mostly green top and white belly with a
    horizontal black stripe.
  • One of the most highly targeted game fish in
    Michigan

Smallmouth bass
  • Prefers colder water around rocks sand
  • Mostly bronze body with dark vertical bars
  • Mainly feeds on baitfish and crayfish
  • Generally lives in clear water

Carp
  • Thought to be a more dirty of a fish
  • Feeds off the bottom on whatever it finds
  • Brownish/yellow color with noticeable scales
  • Very tough and survives in any water

Walleye
  • Most recognized by its hologram silver eyes
  • Mainly feeds during the night on baitfish
  • Caught mainly to eat due to its good taste
  • Tannish body with a darker back and a white
    stomach

Bluegill
  • One of the most common fish in MI
  • Thrives in warmer murkier water
  • Feeds on insects and other small organisms
  • Reddish-yellow under-belly with a black tip on
    gill-plate

Yellow Perch
  • Greenish body with yellow fins white stomach and
    6-8 vertical stripes
  • Survives mainly in colder clearer water
  • Feeds on mainly minnows and small organisms
  • Same family as the walleye
