2 Insects are animals.
3Insects have three body parts a head, a thorax
and an abdomen. They have six legs and some have
wings. Insects have two antennae and compound
eyes. They can be different colours.
4Insects can use their legs to walk, crawl and
run. Insects such as flies and bees can use their
wings to fly. Some insects can swim and some
insects such as grasshoppers can jump.
Ants crawl.
Water beetles swim.
Grasshoppers jump.
Butterflies fly.
5Insects can live almost anywhere. They can live
in grass, houses, holes, trees and gardens.
Insects such as ants live in nests. Bees live in
hives.
Cockroaches live in houses.
Grasshoppers live in gardens.
Bees live in hives.
6Insects can eat plants and some insects eat
nectar. Some insects eat other insects.
Ladybeetles eat aphids.
Butterflies drink nectar.
Grasshoppers eat plants.
Praying mantises eat other insects.
7Most insects lay eggs. The eggs hatch and the
babies do not look like the adults. Caterpillars
hatch out of eggs, spin a cocoon and then change
into butterflies or moths.
Caterpillars do not look like butterflies.

The hissing cockroach has live babies.
8Insects such as ants can bite you. Bees and wasps
can sting you. Insects such as stick insects can
be camouflaged.
Some ants can bite.
Bees can sting.
