Title: Brush Control using Herbicides is Temporary

1
Cut-stubble
Basal bark
Broadcast foliar
High volume
Low volume
Dormant stem
Cut stump
2
Why doesnt ODOT have a major problem with brush
species along the highway ?
3
Because most roadsides get mowed from fence to
fence at least 1 time a year !
4
ODOT Brush Problem Areas
  • around creeks rivers
  • around box-end culverts, wet or dry
  • wet ditches
  • steep slopes
  • rocky or rough roadsides

5
Liabilities of Brush Problems
  • vehicle/tree collisions
  • (clear zone)
  • sight distance (curves, driveways,etc)
  • clogged drainages (flooding)
  • tree/limbs falling on road

6
Brush Control Herbicides
  • Tordon K, Tordon 101 Mixture - picloram
  • Garlon 4 3A, Pathfinder II - triclopyr
  • Roundup Pro, Accord, Rodeo - glyphosate
  • Krenite S - fosamine ammonium
  • Arsenal, Chopper - imazapyr

7
Brush Control Herbicides
  • Soil active/soil applied
  • Tordon K, Tordon 101 Mixture, Arsenal, Chopper

  • Foliar applied/no soil activity
  • Garlon 4 3A, Pathfinder II, Accord
  • Roundup Pro, Rodeo, Krenite S

8
  • At the rates used for brush control all
treatments including the following will severely
    damage grass understories
  • Roundup Pro, Accord, Rodeo, Arsenal, Chopper
  • All other products will not injure grasses

9
Tordon K Tordon 101 MRestricted Use Pesticide
  • Considered to be toxic to plants at very low
    concentrations (drift)
  • groundwater concerns (water or soil runoff)

10
Brush control using herbicides gives only
temporary control!
  • Retreatment Cycle
  • 1 - 4 years

11
Questions to Ask Yourself !
  • Is my brush problem in or adjacent to standing or
    moving water ?
  • Answer
  • If yes, use Rodeo surfactant
  • If no, use any of the others

12
Questions to Ask Yourself !
  • How thick is the brush ?
  • Answer
  • low, medium, or high density
  • basal bark, broadcast foliar, cut-stubble, cut
    stump
  • dormant stem techniques

13
What is Brush Density?Stems / Acre
  • Low Medium High
  • 0 - 400 400 - 1000 1000
  • 1 stem/ 1 stem/ 1 stem/
  • 10 - 12 ft2 6 - 8 ft2 2 - 3
    ft2

14
Why does brush density matter ?Has to do with
efficiency
  • Low density - treat individual stems (spot
    treatment)
  • Medium to High density - must be treated with a
    broadcast type application

15
Questions to Ask Yourself !
  • Can I make a boombuster application or will I
need to use a handgun ?
  • Depends on
  • How close is the brush to the road?
  • How close to water will you be spraying?
  • How many miles do you have to spray?

16
Questions to Ask Yourself !
  • What is the average height of the brush ?
  • Answer
  • 15 ft. or more, removal followed by cut-stump
    trt.
  • techniques

17
Questions to Ask Yourself !
  • Will the people in my county tolerate brush
    brownout?
  • Answer
  • Yes, then use foliar applications
  • No, then use cut-stubble, cut stump
  • dormant stem, or basal bark

18
Cut-stubble Technique
  • Brush is mowed treated as soon as possible
    (within a few days)
  • use BoomBuster or Off-Center tips to make a
    uniform application to the soil
  • used to reclaim heavily infested areas
  • late spring or early summer is best time
  • this technique/treatment will prevent resprouting
    by using soil active picloram

19
Cut-stubble Technique
  • roots collar of stubble will pick up the
    herbicide
  • no brownout from this treatment
  • do not use surfactants with this treatment
  • use a minimum of 25 GPA carrier
  • the following year use basal bark to spot
  • do not make applications during drought

20
Cut-stubble Treatment
  • Herbicide Tordon K
  • Rate 2 quarts prod./A
  • Carrier Rate 50 GPA
  • Timing of Application
  • late spring through summer

21
Cut-stubble Treatment
  • Arsenal may be added to a cut-stubble treatment
to pick up control of ash and hickory.
  • Caution grass understories will be severely
    damaged

22
Broadcast Foliar Technique(High Volume, 75 to
250 GPA)
  • Used to reclaim medium to heavily infested areas
  • early summer is best, but late will work
  • late summer requires more surfactant
  • use BoomBuster, Off-Center, or handgun
  • do not make applications during drought
  • brush should be thoroughly wetted

23
Broadcast Foliar Technique(High Volume, 75 to
250 GPA)
  • handgun application, Spray-to-Wet
  • broadcast application, leaves should
  • be wet but not dripping
  • most brush species are susceptible
  • do not spray any water
  • this treatment causes severe brownout
  • do not disturb treated area for 1 month

24
Broadcast Foliar Treatment
  • Herbicide Tordon K Garlon 4
  • Rate 1 qts. 3 qts. prod./A
    (surfactant at 1 - 2 qts./100 gal.)
  • Carrier Rate 75 GPA (boombuster)
  • 150 GPA (handgun)
  • Timing of Application
  • late spring through summer

25
Broadcast Foliar Treatment
  • Herbicide Tordon 101 Mixture
  • Rate 4 qts. prod./A
  • (surfactant at 1 - 2 qts./100 gal.)
  • Carrier Rate 75 GPA (boombuster)
  • 150 GPA (handgun)
  • Timing of Application
  • late spring through summer

26
Broadcast Foliar Treatment
  • Arsenal may be added to a broadcast foliar
treatment to pick up control of
  • ash and hickory.
  • Caution grass understories will be severely
    damaged

27
What is Brush Density?Stems / Acre
  • Low Medium High
  • 0 - 400 400 - 1000 1000
  • 1 stem/ 1 stem/ 1 stem/
  • 10 - 12 ft2 6 - 8 ft2 2 - 3
