5Luke 827-28 (NKJV)
(27) And when He stepped out on the land, there
met Him a certain man from the city who had
demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes,
nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. (28)
When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before
Him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to
do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I
beg You, do not torment me!
6Luke 829-30 (NKJV)
(29) For He had commanded the unclean spirit to
come out of the man. For it had often seized him,
and he was kept under guard, bound with chains
and shackles and he broke the bonds and was
driven by the demon into the wilderness. (30)
Jesus asked him, saying, What is your name? And
he said, Legion, because many demons had
entered him.
7Luke 831-33 (NKJV)
(31) And they begged Him that He would not
command them to go out into the abyss. (32) Now a
herd of many swine was feeding there on the
mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit
them to enter them. And He permitted them. (33)
Then the demons went out of the man and entered
the swine, and the herd ran violently down the
steep place into the lake and drowned.
8Luke 834-35 (NKJV)
(34) When those who fed them saw what had
happened, they fled and told it in the city and
in the country. (35) Then they went out to see
what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found
the man from whom the demons had departed,
sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his
right mind. And they were afraid.
9Luke 836-37 (NKJV)
(36) They also who had seen it told them by what
means he who had been demon-possessed was healed.
(37) Then the whole multitude of the surrounding
region of the Gadarenes asked Him to depart from
them, for they were seized with great fear.
10Luke 838-39 (NKJV)
(38) And He got into the boat and returned. Now
the man from whom the demons had departed begged
Him that he might be with Him. But Jesus sent him
away, saying, (39) Return to your own house, and
tell what great things God has done for you. And
he went his way and proclaimed throughout the
whole city what great things Jesus had done for
him.

Sceva attempted it the evil spirit hurt them
(Acts 1913-16)
14Wild Speculation
- Charismatics and Pentecostals have a tendency to
attribute any significant act of sinfulness, even
by their own children, as being the temporary
indwelling of Satan or an evil spirit. - People who are merely strange or afflicted with
mental illness are often thought of as being
demon-possessed. - People who lead extremely wicked lives or who are
deep into the occult are often thought of as
being demon possessed.
15The Bible vs. Speculation
ISBE In the New Testament the demons belong to
the unseen world, they are incapable of
manifestation except in in the disorders which
they cause there are no materializations, no
grotesque narratives of appearances and
disappearances, no morbid dealing with repulsive
details, no license of speculation in the
narratives.
16Demons Are Unclean Spirits
- When evening came, they brought to Him many who
were demon-possessed and He cast out the spirits
with a word, and healed all who were ill. - Matthew 816
- Demons and Spirits are used interchangeably.
17Demons Are Unclean Spirits
- The Scriptures distinguish between regular
sickness and the physical injuries and effects of
evil spirits. - And at even, when the sun did set, they brought
unto him all that were sick, and them that were
possessed with demons.Mark 132

evil spirits. - and they brought to Him all sick people who
were afflicted with various diseases and
torments, and those who were demon-possessed,
epileptics, and paralytics and He healed them.
Matthew 424
19Characteristics Of Demons
- Knew that Jesus was the Son of God. I know who
You are, the Holy One of God Luke 434 - Were aware of their ultimate doom. torment us
before the time? Matt. 829 demons also
believe and shudder Jas. 219 - Wanted badly to occupy a physical body.send us
into the herd of swine Matt. 828-34 - Could make a choice to come and go.I will

20Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- WHY did God allow unclean spirits to enter into
people? - The Bible provides testimony that supports two
conclusions.
21Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To establish the Lords absolute authority as the
Son of God.
1. Jesus exhibited power over diseases and
physical ailments (Matt. 920-22 John 446-54
91-41)
22Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To establish the Lords absolute authority as the
Son of God.
2. Jesus exerted His authority over material
objects. E.g., feeding of 5,000 Matt. 14
coin in fish mouth Matt. 17 water to
wine John 2 net of 153 fish John 21
23Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To establish the Lords absolute authority as the
Son of God.
3. Jesus showed that He could control the
elements of nature, e.g., the wind and the seas
(Matt. 823-27)
24Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To establish the Lords absolute authority as the
Son of God.
4. Jesus suspended the force of gravity when He
walked upon the waters of the Sea of Galilee
(Matt. 1422-23)
25Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To establish the Lords absolute authority as the
Son of God.
5. Jesus released certain ones who had been
captured by death.Officials daughter Matt.
918-26 Lazarus John 111-45
26Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To establish the Lords absolute authority as the
Son of God.
6. Would not Jesus also demonstrate His authority
in the spirit realm?
27Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To establish the Lords absolute authority as the
Son of God.
They were all amazed, so that they debated among
themselves, saying, What is this? A new teaching
with authority! He commands even the unclean
spirits, and they obey Him. Mark 127
28The Spirits Are Under Jesus Authority
- But if I by the Spirit of God cast out demons,
then is the kingdom of God come upon you. - Matthew 1228
29The Spirits Are Under Jesus Authority
- The seventy disciples returned from an
evangelistic trip and joyfully proclaimed
Lord, even the demons are subject to us in thy
name. - Jesus responded I beheld Satan fallen as
lightning from heaven. - Luke 1017-18
30The Spirits Are Under Jesus Authority
- Now is the prince of this world cast out.
- John 1231
31Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To confirm as true the Word of God through signs,
wonders and miracles.
32A Sign To Confirm The Word
- Mark 1617-20
- (17) And these signs will follow those who
believe In My name they will cast out demons
they will speak with new tongues (18) they will
take up serpents and if they drink anything
deadly, it will by no means hurt them they will
lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.
(19) So then, after the Lord had spoken to them,
He was received up into heaven, and sat down at
the right hand of God. (20) And they went out
and preached everywhere, the Lord working
with them and confirming the word through the
accompanying signs. Amen.
33A Sign To Confirm The Word
- Hebrews 23-4
- how shall we escape if we neglect so great a
salvation, which at the first began to be spoken
by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who
heard Him, God also bearing witness both with
signs and wonders, with various miracles, and
gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own
will?
34Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To confirm as true the Word of God through signs,
wonders and miracles.
1. The primary purposes of miraculous gifts were
to (1) reveal the Word of God and (2) confirm its
authenticity (Mark 169-20 Heb. 21-4).
35Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To confirm as true the Word of God through signs,
wonders and miracles.
- No signs like the miracles of the first century
are apparent today. - Miracles were self-authenticating phenomena that
could not be denied, even by hostile critics (cf.
Acts 414-16).
36Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To confirm as true the Word of God through signs,
wonders and miracles.
- No signs like the miracles of the first century
are apparent today. - No one can walk upon water, raise the dead, calm
a raging storm, turn water into wine, instantly
heal an amputated ear, etc.
37Divine Purpose In Allowing Demon Possession
- To confirm as true the Word of God through signs,
wonders and miracles.
- The New Testament explicitly states that the day
would come when miracles would cease. 1
Corinthians 138-10
38Demon Possession Today?
- Do evil spirits enter into human bodies and
afflict people today? I confidently affirm they
do not. - So-called modern examples of demon possession and
exorcism bear no resemblance to the genuine
examples of spirit possession described in the
New Testament.
39Demon Possession Today?
- Do evil spirits enter into human bodies and
afflict people today? I confidently affirm they
do not. - Demon possession was a first-century experience
suspended near the end of the apostolic era
because it had fulfilled Gods purposes for it.
40Demon Possession Today?
- Do evil spirits enter into human bodies and
afflict people today? I confidently affirm they
do not. - Zechariah 131-2 prophesies of the removal of
the unclean spirit from the land at the time of
Jesus.
41Doctrines Of Demons
- DEMONS DO NOT POSSESS BODIES BUT ARE STILL AT
WORK TO INFLUENCE THE MIND THROUGH LIES AND FALSE
DOCTRINE.
42Doctrines Of Demons
1 Timothy 41-3 1 Now the Spirit expressly says
that in latter times some will depart from the
faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and
doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in
hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared
with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and
commanding to abstain from foods
43Todays Warfare
- When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own,
for he is a liar and the father of it.John 844
Who exchanged the truth of God for the lie
Romans 124-26
44Todays Warfare
1 John 41 Beloved, do not believe every spirit,
but test the spirits, whether they are of God
because many false prophets have gone out into
the world.
45Todays Warfare
- The devil seeks whom he may devour.
- 2 Peter 58
Let no one deceive you James116
46Todays Warfare
- 2 Corinthians 104-5for the weapons of our
warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely
powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We
are destroying speculations and every lofty thing
raised up against the knowledge of God, and we
are taking every thought captive to the obedience
of Christ
47Todays Warfare
- Ephesians 610-13 (10) Finally, my brethren, be
strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.
(11) Put on the whole armor of God, that you may
be able to stand against the wiles of the
devil. (12) For we do not wrestle against flesh
and blood, but against principalities, against
powers, against the rulers of the darkness of
this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness
in the heavenly places. (13) Therefore take up
the whole armor of God, that you may be able to
withstand in the evil day, and having done all,
to stand.
