2The History of Virginia Middle School Virginia
Middle School is located at 501 Piedmont Avenue
in Bristol, Virginia. The original structure is
83 years old and consists of 3 stories. The
building served as Virginia High School from
1914-1953. In 1953, a new high school was built
and this site became Virginia Junior High School
serving seventh and eighth students. After a
concept study by the School Board, the name was
changed to Virginia Middle School in 1990. The
school underwent extensive renovation in 1995 and
was completed for total occupancy in 1996. The
school presently serves grades six through eight.
Our school has been placed on the National
Register of Historic Places by the United States
Department of the Interior and has been
registered as a Virginia Historic Landmark.

at Virginia Middle School, with the help of
parents and community, strive to educate our
students in a safe and nurturing environment,
where academics, physical fitness, cultural
awareness, social skills, self-motivation, and
self-discipline come together to promote
individual achievements and productive,
responsible citizenship.

- Teachers email addresses are posted on the school
and school division website. - Parents can meet with teachers before school,
after school, or on planning periods. If other
times are needed, special arrangements can be
made at various times during the school day. - Parents may call the office and leave a message
for the teacher to return the call. - All teachers have websites with useful
information pertaining to class as well as
contact information. - Many teachers request parents email address to
set up class distribution list to contact
parents about upcominfgassignments and events. - Teachers are required to keep records of parent
contacts, a minimum of 12 contacts per 6 weeks

- Replace bulbs in all light not burning
- Paint yellow caution marks with sand on all
balcony steps - Insert a center rain in the middle of both sets
of steps

- Currently there are no VMS staff assigned in the
bus drop off or parent drop off areas. - Students easily could leave the school grounds or
be abducted without school staff knowing.
