Bebop vs Blues

• developed in the 1940s by Charlie Parker and
  Dizzy Gillespie
  
• out of the swing music of the 1930s
• small-groups
• fast tempos, asymmetrical phrasing,
  intricate melodies, and rhythm sections that
  expanded on their role as tempo-keepers
  

•  emerged at the end of the 19th century  s a form
  of self-expression in the African-American
  communities in the US
  
• from spirituals, work songs, field
  hollers, shouts and chantsand rhymed simple
  narrative ballads
  
• solo artists as well as bands
• a standard harmonic progression of twelve bars in
  4/4, lyrics,  evokes feelings of being
  downtrodden or melancholy

Joe Pass (January 13, 1929 May 23, 1994)

• Born Joseph Anthony Passalaqua in New Brunswick,
  New Jersey
  
• Became interested in guitar after he saw "singing
  cowboy"
  
• Gene Autry in the film Ride Tenderfoot Ride
• My father thought I showed signs of being able
  to play"
  
• By the time Pass turned 14 years old - the
  Gentlemen of Rhythm
  
• (patterned after the music of the legendary
  Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt)
  
• The following year his parents sent him to New
  York to study with studio guitar player Harry
  Volpe  
  
• His father got sick, and he took the opportunity
  to escape to New York
  
• Became addicted to drugs (arrested in 1954)
• From the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s he his career
  into high gear recorded three albums in Germany
  , played on releases with jazz artists Earl
  Bostie, Julie London, Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson,
  Chet Baker, and Carmen McRae, worked as a sideman
  for Frank Sinatra, Donald O'Connor, Della Reese,
  Leslie Uggams, Steve Allen, and Johnny Mathis.

Joe Pass (January 13, 1929 May 23, 1994)

• During the 1970s and 1980s, he became the most
  recorded jazz guitarist, producing solo records
  as well as accompanying other jazz greats like
  Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald,
  Sarah Vaughn, Stephane Grappelli, Oscar Peterson,
  Milt Jackson, Zoot Sims, Ray Brown, and others
• Pass died from liver cancer in Los Angeles,
  California at the age of 65 
  
•  His solo style was marked by an advanced linear
  technique, sophisticated harmonic sense,
  counterpoint between improvised lead lines, bass
  figures and chords, spontaneous modulations, and
  transitions from fast tempos to  rubato 
  passages.

Django Reinhardt(23 January 1910 16 May 1953)

• Belgian Gypsy jazz guitarist
• Twelve years old he received his first
  instrument, a banjo/guitar
  
• Learnt to play by mimicking the fingerings of
  musicians he watched
  
• When thirteen he began his musical career playing
  with popular accordionist Guerino at a dance hall
  on the Rue Monge
  
• He couldnt read or write, so his name appeared
  as Jiango Renard on his records
  
• At the age of eighteen he got his left hand and
  right knee badly burnt
  
• Developed a whole new fingering system built
  around the two fingers on his left hand that had
  full mobility (his soloing was all done with the
  index and middle fingers)
• 1934 The Quintet of the Hot Club of France was
  formed
  
• First sides recorded Dinah, Tiger Rag, Oh Lady
  be Good, and I Saw Stars
  
• 1939 the Quintet was touring in England when the
  war broke out
  
• He toured briefly with Duke Ellington in the US

• 1951 he retired to the small village of Samois
  sur Seine
  
• On May 16th 1953 Django suffered a massive brain
  hemorrhage
  
• and subsequently died

B. B. King (September 16, 1925 present)

• Played on street corners for dimes, and would
  sometimes play in as many as four towns a night
  
• 1947 - hitchhiked to Memphis, TN, to pursue his
  music career
  
•  1948 - performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio
  program on KWEM out of West Memphis, considered
  as his big break
  
• He got a ten-minute spot on black-staffed and
  managed Memphis radio station WDIA - "King's
  Spot which later on became B.B.King
  
• Lucille
• He developed one of the world's most identifiable
  guitar styles, borroweingfrom Blind Lemon
  Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, integrating
  his precise and complex vocal-like string bends
  and his left hand vibrato, both of which have
  become indispensable components of rock
  guitarist's vocabulary
• B.B. continues to tour extensively, averaging
  over 250 concerts per year around the world.
