• First internationally acclaimed American composer
  of classical music
  
• Studied at the Paris Conservatory where he
  impressed Chopin and Berlioz
  
• Hailed as the spokesperson of the New World as
  most Europeans thought all Amercans to be
  barbarians.

• Returns to the United States with the onset of
  the Civil War in 1862 a staunch Unionist, he
  performed national tunes at his concerts as well
  as promoting both Classical and popular music as
  well as education.
• Contracted malaria while living in Rio de Janiero
  and died from overdose of quinine given to him to
  treat the disease!

Gottschalks Music

• Remembered today almost exclusively for his solo
  piano music, although he wrote operas, songs, and
  symphonies.
  
• His music is rooted in folk melodies and rhythms.
