Title: Advanced Services IPv6

1
Advanced Services IPv6
  • Dale Finkelson
  • University of Nebraska
  • IPv6 working group chair
  • dmf_at_unl.edu

2
Topics
  • History and state of v6 in Abilene
  • Motivations
  • V6 working group activities

3
Abilene
  • Operates as an IPv6 network.
  • There are 4 Abilene Core nodes
  • Sunnyvale, Indianapolis, Pittsburg and Denver.
  • These are interconnected by a full mesh of
    tunnels.
  • Cisco 7200s running EFT code.
  • Has been allocated 20010468/35

4
Abilene
  • What the Wide project taught us.
  • What you can expect in the Next Generation
    Abilene.

5
How many Gigapops.
  • There are about 10 connected gigapops.
  • These are either tunneled into the backbone or
    natively connected via ATM.
  • These sites are allocated a /40 out of the
    Abilene address space.
  • These run BGP between themselves and the core.

6
How many actual sites
  • We estimate 15 to 20 actual connected sites at
    this time.
  • These sites are allocated a /48 out of the
    address space.
  • Equivalent to a /16 with 64 bits of host space.
  • Increasing as we teach more sites about how to
    add v6 capability.

7
What are the motivators for IPv6?
  • Retaining end-to-end transparency.
  • Making public addresses available, thus reducing
    the reliance on NATs.
  • Allows IPsec to work more easily.
  • Manageability of Networks.
  • End-to-End networks are easier to understand and
    manage.

8
What are the motivators for IPv6?
  • Take advantage of new capabilities on V6.
  • Addressing architectures
  • Renumbering efficiencies
  • More integration of Multicast
  • New version of ICMP
  • Insure interconnectivity with our International
    partners.

9
Status of International connections
  • Abilene Peering relationships
  • 6Tap at the MREN.
  • WIDE at Sunnyvale.
  • Over a DS-3 to Japan
  • NORDUnet at NYC from the PSC router.
  • CUDI of Mexico in Southern California
  • We want this to expand. Abilene will transit IPv6
traffic for now as an incentive to encourage IPv6
    use.

10
What are we actively doing
  • Testing at ITEC
  • Testing network throughput more then
    interoperability.
  • IPv6 networking workshops.
  • We have done 5 of these since May
  • We have 5 or 6 more scheduled
  • http//ipv6.internet2.edu/workshops/workshop-ufl.s
    html

11
What is the goal here?
  • To play an activist role in the deployment of
    IPv6 networks.
  • To insure that our community is a leader in
    deployment of new technology.
  • If you want to help contact
  • Dale Finkelson dmf_at_unl.edu
  • Michael Lambert lambert_at_psc.edu
