3What is Hung Gar?
Hung gar is a complete system of Chinese martial
arts. It a very traditional style thats known
for its powerful fighting techniques and health
benefits. Hung gar incorporates both internal
and external training. Through repeated training
of kung fu forms, conditioning of arms and legs
by hitting trees, and sparring with others a
strong external style is built. Even though Hung
Gar is classified as a hard external style, it
involves just as much internal martial arts as
any other style. Through correct breathing,
sounds, and emotion a strong internal style is
developed. This is how Hung Gar is classified as
the style thats Hard as iron, soft as thread.
Its a style thats defensive, but once attacked
it can quickly become very aggressive and
offensive.
4Stances
Hung Gar is also known for its strong stable
stances. The stances of hung gar are the basics
and the main foundation of the art. Stance
training is highly emphasized on.
There are three basic stances in Hung Gar
- Sei ping ma (horse stance)- called horse stance
because it resembles someone riding a horse.
Weight is split between both legs 50/50. The
knees are turned out, butt tucked in, back
straight, and weight sunk down.
Horse stance
- Ding Ji ma (bow/arrow stance)- firm stance where
knee of front leg is bent and back leg is
straight. Weight is distributed 60/40. The
waist and hips are turned inward and back is
straight.
Bow arrow stance
- Dui ma (cat stance)- most of body weight is place
on the rear leg. Rear leg is bent holding all
the weight, while the front leg is bent at the
knee and has its front foot barely touching the
ground. Back is straight, weight sunk down.

Forms are sequences of movements which carry the
characteristics, techniques,principals,
philosophy, and tradition of the style
Hung Gar has seven main free hand forms
- Lau Gar Kuen- Lau family form
- Gong Zi Fook Fu- Tempting Tiger form
- Fu Hok Sueng Ying Tiger Crane
- Wu Diep Jerng Butterfly Palms
- Sup Ying- 5 animals, 5 elements

7Training Methods
- Da Sam Sing- Forearm conditioning exercise.
Hitting a training partner or a tree, one
conditions his arm/muscles/bone. Strike 3 sides
of the forearm. The top , left, and right.
Da Sam Sing
- Iron rings- place iron rings which weigh about 1
pound a ring and play forms. The rings are
designed to hit the back of the hand when
throwing a punch to strengthen the arm and to
remind the person to hold a tight fist.
