Haskins, Associate Professor of the Department of
Physical Therapy, is retiring from Florida
International University.
2FIU Physical Therapy- MISSION
- Meet the physical therapy needs of the local,
state, national, and international community by - providing entry-level and post-professional
physical therapy education - advancing the knowledge base of physical therapy,
- developing innovative model physical therapy
service programs, and - providing ethnically diverse physical therapy
practitioners poised to help eliminate health
disparities by providing culturally competent
health care.
3FIU Physical Therapy History
- One of the first four health programs established
when FIU opened in 1972. - First class of 20 students graduated in 1975 with
a BS in PT. - The Commission of Accreditation of Physical
Therapy Education (CAPTE) has accredited the
program since 1975. - The last class to receive an undergraduate BS in
PT entered in 1998 and graduated in 2000 - Currently PT is a graduate program leading to a
Masters of Science Degree in Physical Therapy

- Curriculum features a progressive,
problem-oriented approach and includes extensive
coverage of the full range of basic medical
sciences, clinical sciences, and hands-on skills
relevant to the practice of physical therapy. - 81-credit program takes 7 consecutive semesters
to complete. - Upon graduation, the students earn a Master of
Science in Physical Therapy (MS) and are then
eligible to apply for licensure anywhere in the
United States.

- 8 full-time faculty members.
- All 8 faculty are licensed physical therapists in
the State of Florida. - 5 (62.5) have doctoral degrees.
- Numerous adjunct faculty members teach in the
department and are valued for the currency and
clinical expertise they bring to the program. - Elbaum and Cornely are Honors Fellows in the FIU
Honors College - All eligible faculty have earned TIP Excellence
in Teaching Awards
