Title: GOALS

1
GOALS
  • Improve present modeling abilities at DoF for
routine fire weather modeling as well as in
support for test burns at specific locations
    (Blackwater and near Lake Okeechobee)
  • Assist DoF with transition to an improved
    meteorological modeling system (statewide)

2
Delivery
  • Quality assessment of WRF vs. MM5
  • Visualization products
  • GIS products
  • Forecasts for test burns
  • All software migrates to DOF computer(s)
  • All completed by 15 September 2007

3
Priorities
  • (1) Run MM5 at the desired high resolution on the
    DOF computer.
  • (2) Run WRF at a comparable resolution on the
    DOF computer.
  • (3) Run the HYSPLIT postprocessor using model
output from MM5 and WRF on the DOF computer.
  • Target of mid-June to migrate software to DOF
  • active coordination/collaboration is required

4
Proposed Model Domains
  • Real-time SE US 4 km domain
  • 300 x 350 gridpoints, 50 levels 15 in PBL
  • 24 hour forecast initiated when 0000 UTC 10 km
    NCEP WRF forecast is available
  • Integration begins by 0430 UTC
  • 24 hr forecast available by 0830 UTC (4-430AM LT)
  • Two regional 1.33 km forest domains
  • 301 x 301 gridpoints, 50 levels 15 in PBL
  • Initial and boundary conditions Above 4 km run
with BC files output every 15 min
  • WRF and MM5

5
Note the land-use resolution improvement in the
1.33 km vs. 4 km domains
6
Current Status - METEOROLOGICAL MODELING
  • New WRF code successfully compiled in HERRZ Linux
    cluster
  • HERRZ cluster performance tests (32-40 nodes
routinely available) indicate good likelihood of
timely routine 4 km MRF and MM5 runs both
available in time for daily morning forecast from
    DoF
  • New MM5 and WRF 4 km model domains redefined
    slightly (domains expanded)
  • Mesonet sites identified (FAWN, RAWS, MADIS,
    others) and QC procedures identified
  • Eglin AFB may provide restricted mesonet data for
    Blackwater experiments
  • Cooperation with NWS Mobile and Tallahassee
    obtained on other data
  • All full time personnel on board now (2.0 FTE
    research associates, faculty, and staff)
    academic year ends 1 May

7
Project Targets - METEOROLOGICAL MODELING
  • Target dates for working prototypes (all have
    Wednesday dates)
  • Web site update - http//moe.met.fsu.edu/fire/ -
    11 April
  • MM5 4 km prototype - 18 April
  • WRF 4 km prototype - 25 April
  • preliminary selection of test prototypes (4 km)
    - 1 May -  through selection of
    initial cases for full validation
  • 2 May - 0.5 FTE Research assistants begin
  • Initial test experiments for 1.33 km MM5 - 9 May
  • Initial test experiments for 1.33 km WRF - 16
    May
  • Target for migration to DOF computers - 15 June
