Find three things to say about how the writer
uses language to entertain here.
AO2v Explain how a writer writes
  • Of course humans have often linked domestic cats
with witches and the devil. It is to do with the
way they think. My cat has a fiend of a feline
mind. She totally understands my predictable homo
sapien way of thinking, with its sense of fair
play its honesty, consistency and loyalty. So,
she plays me for a sucker. One minute she is
stretching langourously and beautifully on the
arm of my chair, seducing me into stroking her,
the next, retching hair-balls and phlegm onto my
new carpet. One minute, Im the main point in her
entire world, the next, Im simply forgotten, an
object in in her way, as she pounces on some poor
insect or gobbles her bowl of Sheba. Take and no
give - thats cats for you.

6
Linguistic devices
  • Write three linguistic devices used.
  • How does the writer use language to entertain?
  • Take one of your examples and using Point
    Evidence explain answer the question.

7
Assessing Your Own Progress
  • Test your partner on two definitions of a
    language device
  • Ask your partner how the writer used language to
    entertain
  • Be prepared to feed your partners answer back to
    class.
