Title: Web 2'0 and IT Infrastructure

1
Web 2.0 and IT Infrastructure
  • Max Finch
  • Head of Digital Communications Infrastructure
  • NHS CFH Technology Office
  • Friday 23rd January 2009

2
What is Web 2.0?
  • Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the
computer industry caused by the move to the
Internet as a platform, and an attempt to
understand the rules for success on that new
    platform
  • Tim O-Reilly speaking at Web 2.0 conference in
    2004
  • However Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World
Wide Web, has questioned whether one can use the
term in any meaningful way, since many of the
technological components of Web 2.0 have existed
since the early days of the Web

3
What is Web 2.0? (continued)
  • 2008 best effort push share something
    Internet
  • Web 2.0 What You Need Is What You Get (2012?)
  • (Gartner IT Summit 2008)
  • Requires sophisticated federation between
autonomous (non-integrated) systems to enable web
    based services to provide intelligent
contextualisation based on knowing who and where
you are and role you are acting in (work roles,
    home and leisure)

4
WEB 2.0 and the NHS (short term)
  • The NHS will increase its business use of
Internet based services for important but
    non-critical services
  • The N3 and the N3 Internet Gateway will need to
evolve to support the NHSs increasing business
    requirements for Internet Connectivity
  • For the NHS Internet treated as best effort only
is no longer appropriate in 2009

5
New Enhanced N3 Internet Gateway
  • Enhancements to the existing N3 Internet Gateway
will provided the following new features
  • HTTP v1.1 Compression
  • URL Categorisation
  • Gold, Silver and Bronze differential service
  • MACH5 Acceleration

6
HTTP v1.1 Compression
  • Is a method of significantly reducing the amount
of N3 resources consumed when users access
Internet services and can increase the page
    display speed
  • Compression of HTTP content occurs on the web
    server (where configured)
  • Content is transmitted in a compressed format
  • Content is uncompressed transparently on the
receiving client browser with negligible impact
    on performance

7
HTTP v1.1 Compression
  • An enhanced N3 Internet Gateway will allow
existing compressed traffic to pass onto N3,
making a bandwidth saving at the gateway and
    across the N3
  • Existing uncompressed traffic from compatible
sources on the internet will also be compressed
    by the enhanced gateway
  • The N3 Customer can benefit from further
bandwidth savings at their CPE by ensuring local
clients, proxies and caches are configured for
    HTTP v1.1 compression

8
URL Categorisation
  • The N3 solution is based on the Blue Coat Web
    Filter (BCWF) categorisation engine, features
    include
  • 15 million website ratings of billions of web
    pages
  • Continuous database updates from WebPulse
    community
  • 61 pre-defined categories
  • Includes Dynamic Real-Time Rating (DRTR), a
patented technology that can instantly categorise
Web sites when a user attempts to access them.

9
URL Categorisation
  • The enhanced N3 Internet Gateway will enable
  • Enhanced level of security, helping to prevent
    Internet attacks from spyware, phishing,
peer-to-peer (P2P) traffic, viral content etc
  • Blocking by category
  • Restricted access to content by time of day
  • Partition available bandwidth at the Internet
Gateway to a hierarchy of prioritisation levels
    (e.g. Gold, Silver, Bronze)

10
URL Categorisation
11
MACH5 Acceleration
  • The enhanced N3 Internet Gateway will support
local NHS organisations who choose to deploy
local internet proxies solution aimed at further
improving Internet performance for their users
    through
  • MACH5 functionality between the internet gateway
and customer end sites that deploy compatible
    Blue Coat technology
  • Potential for Gold service for customers
    employing an agreed AUP

12
MACH5 Acceleration
  • The proprietary acceleration technology from Blue
    Coat provides
  • Bandwidth Management
  • Protocol Optimisation
  • Object Caching
  • Byte Caching
  • Compression
