American-born Greek soprano and perhaps the most
renowned opera singer of the 1950s. She combined
an impressive bel canto technique with great
dramatic gifts. An extremely versatile singer,
her repertoire ranged from classical opera seria
to the bel canto operas of Donizetti, Bellini,
and Rossini, and further, to the works of Verdi
and Puccini, and in her early career, the music
dramas of Wagner. Her remarkable musical and
dramatic talents led to her being hailed La
Divina.

(5 November 1913 8 July 1967) was an English
actress. She won two Academy Awards for playing
"southern belles" Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with
the Wind (1939) and Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar
Named Desire (1951), a role she had also played
in London's West End.

(December 10, 1830 May 15, 1886) was an
American poet. Born in Amherst, Massachusetts to
a successful family with strong community ties,
she lived a mostly introverted and reclusive
life. Throughout her adult life she rarely
traveled outside of Amherst or very far from
home.She became known for her penchant for white
clothing and her reluctance to greet guests or,
later in life, even leave her room. Most of her
friendships were therefore carried out by
correspondence.
