Šiauliai district

• The Šiauliai District is situated in the northern
  part of Lithuania.
• Its total area is 1807 sq. kilometres and number
  of population is approximately 51 thousand.
• Battle axe and the bear figure represents the
  archieved victory against the hordes of Teutonic
  troops. The shield and the crosses not only
  simbolise the hill of crosses, but also the
  strength of the nation and the attitude to
  protect the christian valuables.
• Silver and blue colors represents the historical
  colors used in the flags. These colors show that
  Šiauliai are administratively dependent. The gold
  used in the coat of arms represents the nobility
  and the black color represents the knowledge.

  Šiauliai City.
• Šiauliai (Sun City) is located in Northern part
  of Lithuania.
• First mentioned in the chronicles on the 22
  September 1236.

Hill of Crosses

• There are more than 470 state protective
  memorials of culture in the district. The most
  unique of them is Jurgaiciai (Domantai) mound,
  known as Hill of Crosses.

Hill of Crosses

• The Hill of Crosses is a site of pilgrimage in
  Šiauliai district, in northern Lithuania. Over
  the centuries, not only crosses, but giant
  crucifixes, carvings of Lithuanian patriots,
  statues of the Virgin Mary and thousands of tiny
  effigies and rosaries have been brought here by
  Catholic pilgrims.

Hill of Crosses

• The number of crosses is unknown, but estimates
  put it at about 50,000.
• On September 7, 1993, Pope John Paul II visited
  the Hill of Crosses, declaring it a place for
  hope, peace, love and sacrifice.

Kužiai

• Kužiai - the settlement is first mentioned in the
  17th century.
• Kužiai is located 12 km to the north west from
  Šiauliai with the population of 1,500.
• During WWI and WWII a town was destroyed. After
  WWII Kužiai was rebuilt and its development
  started.

Kužiai

• Theres a wooden church in Kužiai, built in 1946.
• Local residents call the horse "kuzis" (foal),
  this name is also associated with the name of the
  settlement, that is why three silver heads of
  horses with golden bridles and belts on a red
  left ribbon on a field of gold is depicted as the
  coat of arms.

• In year 2007 it was renovated (using EU funds)
