2American artist Georgia OKeeffe, painted more
than 900 works of art during her long life.
Throughout her 98 years she was inspired by
nature, which became the subject of all her works
of art.
3Georgia grew up knowing she would be an artist
even though women werent encouraged to in the
early 1900s. She was raised in Sun Prairie, WI
which is by Madison, Wisconsin! Her family had a
dairy farm.
4One day, her art teacher brought a wildflower to
class. It was a jack-in-the pulpit. It was a
flower that Georgia often had seen on her
fathers farm. The teacher told the class to
look at the flowers color and shape.
5She started me looking at thingslooking very
carefully at details, Georgia said. It was a
lesson she would never forget.
6In fact, Georgia became famous for her pictures
of natural objects, especially flowers. At one
point, she made a series of jack-in-the-pulpit
paintings. Her teacher had taught her now to
take everyday things for granted, and she
discovered the simple beauty of everyday things.
7Georgia often painted in watercolor. Her
colorful paintings became popular. In the
1920s, she began painting pictures of giant
flowers that filled the canvas. The flowers were
so big and beautiful that they made the person
looking at them feel as small as a bumblebee
buzzing around the petals.
8No other artist had ever done anything like this
before. Her special talent, shown in paintings
like those to follow, made Georgia one of
Americas most famous artists. She painted
hundreds of magnified flowers.
