5 Sparta was a warlike city-state located on the
southern tip of Peloponessus. Out of all the
other city-states, Sparta was the strictest and
warlike. In Sparta, when a baby was born it would
be examined, if the baby looked like he/she was
going to be strong, he/she would live. But, if
he/she was considered weak he/she was to be left
on a mountainside to die. Also, when a boy turne
d 7 yr., he had to go to military camp to be
trained to be a soldier and defend Sparta. So you
see, Sparta was a powerful an strong city-state.
6 After the Peloponnesian War, an empire called
Macedonia invaded Greece. The people of Macedonia
loved Greek culture, but none as much as King
Philip II and his son Alexander. Alexander was
taught by Aristotle and was crowned king when he
was 20 in 336 BC. As soon as he became king, he
spread Greek culture and conquered lands (Like
Persia and Greece) and made a vast empire. For
that, he went down in history as one of the most
talented generals of all time. After 13 years of
ruling, in 323 BC, Alexander the Great died
because of a fever and his great empire broke
apart.
7 In ancient Greece, there were many famous and
important people. A man named Pericles was a very
important person to Greece because he developed
Democracy and lead Athens during the high of its
power and influence (Also known as the Golden Age
of Athens). Another important person who went by
the name of Herodotus was a Greek historian who
was known as the father of history. Herodotus
observed the Persian War and lived to write about
it. The last person I want to mention is a great
poet named Homer who wrote 2 very famous epics,
the Lliad and the Odyssey.
8 The Olympics in ancient Greece were very d
ifferent from the modern day Olympics. First of
all, the Olympics in Greece were held as a
festival to honor Zeus in the city of Olympia.
Every 4 years, city-states would send their best
athletes to compete against other athletes. In
these Olympics, only men could compete and they
would have to compete naked. There were a series
of competitions and the best of each would be
rewarded. Now the rewards were not metals, they
were olive crowns and flowers, but when a winner
goes back to its city-state, he would be
handsomely rewarded.

11In ancient Greece, the Greeks believed in more
than one God. They developed a family of Gods to
explain why everything was. But, these gods were
not classified in the same category, they were
divided into three groups (Titans, Olympians, and
Other). The Titans were known as the elder gods
who ruled earth before Olympians overthrew them.
The Olympians were the twelve gods who were in
some way related to the Titans, while Others were
semi-gods.
