Title: Food Chain

Food Chain
  • Created by Kati Graves

Food Chain
  • A food chain shows how each living thing gets its
    food.
  • A food chain always starts with plant life and
    ends with an animal.
  • There are Omnivores, Herbivores, Producers,
Carnivores, Decomposers in a food chain.

3
Producers
  • Living things which take the non living matter
from the environment, such as minerals and gases
and uses them to support life.
  • Green plants are considered producers and the are
at the beginning of the food chain.

4
Decomposers
  • These are the living things that feed off dead
    plants and animals.
  • Examples are fungi, like mushrooms, and bacteria.

5
Omnivores
  • People and Animals who eat both plants and
    animals.
  • Unlike herbivores, omnivores can't digest some of
the substances in grains or other plants that do
    not produce fruit

6
Herbivores
  • A herbivore is an animal that gets its energy
from eating plants, and only plants.
  • Many herbivores have special digestive systems
that let them digest all kinds of plants,
    including grasses.
  • Many herbivores need lots of energy to survive
and like cows and sheep eat all day long.

7
Carnivores
  • A carnivore is an animal that gets food from
    killing and eating other animals.
  • Carnivores generally eat herbivores, but can eat
    omnivores, and occasionally other carnivores.
  • They help other species from getting
    overpopulated by eating them.

What does Energy Do?
  • A food chain models the movement of energy in an
    ecosystem.
  • The sun is the source of energy for the entire
    food chain.
  • Plants capture about 1 of the light energy for
    photosynthesis.
  • Herbivores consume about 10 of the plants
    biomass
  • Carnivores capture and consume about 10 of the
    energy stored by the herbivores.

There is a difference
  • Food Chains
  • Food Chains follow a single path as animals eat
    each other.
  • Food Webs
  • Food webs show how many animals are
    interconnected by different paths.

21
Make your own!
  • Most Food Chains only have 4 to 5 links.
