Physical Description

• Meerkats have gray, tan or yellowish fur on their
  bodies with white fur under their head.
• They can be 12 inches tall, 20 inches long, and
  weigh up to 2 pounds.
• Meerkats are one of the smallest mammals in the
  world.

Habitat

• Meerkats live in southwest Angola, Namibia,
  Botswana and South Africa.
• They live in dry, open county.
• They dig dens and live in them and rarely come
  out.

Food and Diet

• Meerkats are omnivores which means they eat meat
  and plants.
• They eat many things like insects, spiders,
  lizards, and bird eggs.
• They also eat grass and dry plants.

Predators

• Meerkats are hunted by eagles, jackals, and
  ratels (a kind of weasel.)
• Sometimes they try to fight or scare eagles and
  jackals.
• Meerkats are not usually caught by their enemies
  because they escape into their burrows.

Babies

• New born baby meerkats can weigh up to two
  ounces.
• A female meerkat can have 2, 3, or 4 babies at a
  time.
• Baby meerkats stay with their moms for about 6
  months.

• One amazing thing about Meerkats is they eat
  poisonous snakes and scorpions.
• Unlike many animals Meerkats are far from
  extinction.
• Meerkats are VERY hard to find alone.
• They like to be in groups called mobs or
  colonies.
