6Non-Obejective Art/ Non-Representational art
- Pieter Cornelis (Piet) Mondriaan, after
1912 Mondrian, (pronounced Dutch IPA pit
'm?ndrian, later IPA pit 'm?nd?i?n), (March
7, 1872February 1, 1944) was a Dutch painter. - He was an important contributor to the De
Stijl art movement and group, which was founded
by Theo van Doesburg. He evolved
a non-representational form which he
termed Neo-Plasticism. This consisted of a grid
of vertical and horizontal black lines and the
use of the three primary colours.1
7Regionalism and the America Scene
- Regionalism became an popular art style in which
artists painted the scenes and event that were
typical of their sections of America.
- Examples Thomas Hart Benton painted his native
Missouri, John Steuart Curry painted Kansas and
Grant Wood painted scenes of Iowa.

9Contributions of American Artists
- Stuart Davis
- He was born in Philadelphia to Edward Wyatt Davis
and Helen Stuart Davis. His parents both worked
in the arts. His father was the art editor of
the Philadelphia Presswhile his mother was
a sculptor. Davis studied painting, and art
under Robert Henri, the leader of the
early modern art group the Eight he was one of
the youngest painters to exhibit in the
controversial Armory Show of 1913

10- Georgia OKeeffee
- Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (November 15, 1887 March
6, 1986) was an American artist.
- Born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Georgia
O'Keeffe was born into a family of ten people and
received widespread recognition for her technical
contributions as well as challenging the
boundaries of modern American artistic style.
O'Keeffe has been a major figure in American art
since the 1920s. She is chiefly known for
paintings in which she synthesized abstraction
and representation in paintings of flowers,
rocks, shells, animal bones and landscapes
11- Jacob Lawrence (September 7, 1917 June 9, 2000)
was an African American painter he was married
to fellow artist Gwendolyn Knight. Lawrence
referred to his style as "dynamic cubism", though
by his own account the primary influence was not
so much French art as the shapes and colors of
Harlem.1 - Lawrence is among the best-known twentieth
century African American painters, a distinction
shared with Romare Bearden. Lawrence was only in
his twenties when his "Migration Series" made him
nationally famous. The series of paintings was
featured in a 1941 issue of Fortune magazine. The
series depicted the epic Great Migration of
African Americans from the rural South to the
urban North.

13Art from 1945-Abstract Expressionism
- After World War II, an new art movement took hold
in New York City. A group of artists such as
Jackson Pollack, Willem de Kooning, Hans Hoffman,
Clifford Still, Helen Frankenthaler, and Franz
Kline. - Paint was applied on large canvases by dripping,
splattering, and fast and active gestures. All
the strokes, lines and colors were born out of
the deep subconscious emotions and feelings that
were not always understood by the artist.
14- Jackson Pollock was the first American abstract
painter to be taken seriously in Europe.
- He studied Old Master paintings and mural
paintings. He also posed for his teachers 1930
murals at the New School for Social Research.
Also at work at this time was Mexican muralist
José Clemente Orozco. He was also exposed to
David Alfaro Siquieros. Their experimental
techniques and large scale art had a lasting
impact on Pollock.

- Born in Holland
- Moved to the US in 1926
- Most powerful and shocking were violent and
brutal depictions of the woman figures.
- He used sweeping, expressive, and at times
violent strokes.

19Minimalism
- A style of art in the early 1960s that was a
direct reaction to abstract expressionism.
Minimalist like Frank Stella, Robert Morris,
Donald Judd, and Mark Rothko wanted to create art
that was ultimately simple and it didnt
represent anything except itself. Art for arts
sake. Much of the art took on geometric forms.

- An art style from the early 1960s that focused
on making a truly American art form based on
popular American icons and culture. These artist
wanted to elevate the low art of mass produced
icons, and elevate them to a high art level.
This gave the artwork of media and masses a
higher creditability.
