Online Resources/Applications
  • What is the internet?
  • What is a URL?
  • Finding Information
  • Conducting searches
  • Using online databases/libraries

9
What is the Internet?
  • The Internet refers to the worldwide network of
    interconnected computers.
  • Every publicly accessible web site is hosted by a
web server computer, which is a part of the
    Internet.
  • Every personal computer, cell phone or other
device that people use to look at web sites is
also a part of the Internet.
  • Web servers are the computers that actually run
    web sites.

10
URLs
  • URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator
and is a reference (an address) to a resource on
    the Internet.
  • The last three letters after the . give some
information about the source of a site.
  • Examples
  • .com - business
  • .edu - post secondary institution
  • .gov - government
  • These can also designate country where site
    originates. Example
  • .ca - Canada
  • .za - South Africa
  • .uk - Great Britiain

11
Finding Information Online
  • Your browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape,
    Firefox, etc.)
  • Using a search engine
  • Framing a search
  • To narrow a search use a phrase that is bracketed
    by quotation marks. For example
  • peer pressure
  • This is a common phrase so to narrow it further
type in peer pressure and adolescent boys to
narrow your search further. Notice the reduction
    in hits
