Construction CommitteeIt is extremely
important to work with the affiliate construction
staff and to clarify the responsibilities of the
Women Build construction committee and the
affiliate.

• Many of the tasks listed below may already have
  been taken care of by the affiliate site
  supervisor so it is extremely important to work
  with the construction staff/volunteers and to
  clarify the responsibilities for both the
  affiliate and the womens build team.
• The Construction committee should make sure the
  following tasks are met, either by the committee
  members themselves or by the affiliate
  construction staff/volunteers
• PRE-CONSTRUCTION
• - Choose a simple, well tested house design. This
  is not a time to experiment with anything new or
  too elaborate.
• - Obtain all necessary permits and variances.
• - Arrange for clearing of site.
• - Locate/engage subcontractors for the
  installation of water, sewer, electricity.
• - Set up temporary facilitiespower pole,
  portable toilets, phone and water.
• - If volunteers will not dig the footings,
  arrange for contractors to do so.
• - If volunteers are digging the footings, be
  sure to order the concrete in a timely fashion so
  that work is not stalled.
• - Ensure all necessary treatments are
  scheduledtermite treatments, etc.
• - Establish a construction schedulebe it a
  week-long blitz/accelerated build, or a 12-month
  build.
• - Work with the Volunteer committee to locate
  adequate leadership for the build.
• - Ensure that all necessary tools and equipment
  will be available on site for the volunteers.
• - Work with the Volunteer Committee to establish
  dates for, and invitations to, the construction
  workshops.
• - Ensure that you have an adequate number of
  leaders for each workshop and that each leader is
  capable of teaching unskilled volunteers. Knowing
  how to build does not necessarilymean knowing how
  to teach.

  following tasks are met, either by the committee
  members themselves or by the affiliate
  construction staff/volunteers
• DURING CONSTRUCTION
• Ensure that all material deliveries are
  scheduled to arrive on site at least one day
  before they are needed and that subcontractors
  and inspections are scheduled for appropriate
  days/times.
• Arrange for all necessary inspections by
  city/county officials.
• Follow-up with the subcontractors to make
  sure their work is completed so as not to hinder
  your building schedule and reporting the results
  back to the affiliate construction staff.
