Title: An Integrated Mobile Service Platform MOEBIUS

1
An Integrated Mobile Service Platform MOEBIUS
  • C. BLONDIA
  • University of Antwerp
  • Performance Analysis of Telecommunication Systems
    (PATS) Research Group

2
Outline
  • Motivation and Objectives of the Moebius project
  • Moebius concept and Platform
  • Security Key Concepts
  • Experimental sites
  • Applications
  • System Studies
  • TCP in a wireless environment
  • Conclusions

3
Motivation Mobile Extranet
  • Extranet
  • Members of structured organization (company,
    hospital), need
  • Access to internal information / services
  • Over the public Internet
  • while away from home premises
  • Mobility
  • Members are mobile

4
Key Objectives
  • To integrate an overall IP based Mobile Extranet
platform, exploiting state of the art
    technologies (GPRS, Mobile IP)
  • To use the platform for applications
  • Health care
  • Business and residential
  • To verify on the platform, the inter-operations
    of the different technologies
  • To identify and study future enhancements to
    better meet global IP concept.

5
Specific Objectives
  • modifications and enhancements of the various
protocols needed to support micro- and
    macro-mobility
  • identification of the impact on the terminal side
    protocols
  • provision of the security infrastructure at both
    network and application level
  • development/adoption and integration of
    user-oriented applications
  • support of different kind of applications with
    guaranteed QoS levels
  • contribution to relevant standardization bodies

Security Key Concepts
  • Provide a secure environment for wireless
applications using current and new internet
    standards
  • Use of an innovative concept SVN (System Virtual
Network) from Bull that provides a unified
network view for entities such as users,
    applications and systems.
  • Protect the access to the intranet with an access
server with new features to support IPV6, Mobile
    IP and IPSEC.

12
Experimental Sites
Basel site, hosted by the University Hospital of
Basel. Focus is on healthcare applications, with
trials on diabetic, cardiovascular and sleep
disorder diseases, with about 30 people per trial.
Basel - U.H.B.
Milan - Siemens
Milan site, hosted by Siemens. Focus is on
business applications.

Moebius System Studies
  • Parameter settings of the platform for optimal
    performance
  • Traffic models for Moebius system
  • Parameter setting
  • Enhancements of platform elements and protocols
  • EDGE, UMTS
  • Macro and micro-mobility
  • Mobility, security management and support of QoS
  • TCP/IP in wireless environment

TCP in Wireless Performance Model
TCP source 1
TCP source 2
22
Network Parameters
  • Constant packet length
  • Bandwidth of shared link b segments/ time unit
  • Buffer capacity of 1st router B segments
  • Propagation delay SESi - DESi ?i
  • Wmax max. number of segments the network can
    accommodate before a loss occurs
  • ?1 ?2 ? ? Wmax B 2 ? b

23
TCP Model
  • TCP Reno
  • Slow Start
  • congestion window doubles each RTT
  • Congestion Avoidance
  • congestion window grows with 1 segment each RTT
  • Fast Retransmit/ Recovery
  • when loss is detected, the window is temporarily
    increased (to react fast on
  • segment loss) but is soon restored to half
  • Model
  • ? no Slow Start Fast Retransmit/Recovery
    (limited duration)
  • ? window always grows linearly reduced to half
    when loss occurs

24
Modelling the Wireless Medium
  • Wireless Access - Additional losses only for
    flow 2
  • -
Incorporate correlated character of these losses
  • Model Variant of Gilbert-Elliott model
  • Two-state Markov Chain (states Good
    Bad)
  • In Good state losses with probability pg
  • In Bad state losses with probability pb
  • Duration of Good and Bad state exponentially
    distributed
  • with means 1/? and 1/? res.
  • Packet Loss Ratio of Wireless Channel
