  • Competitive, traveling hockey program for
    children who live within the Washburn-area
    district boundaries.

WAHA Mission
  • To offer young, committed, athletes an
    opportunity to learn and play competitive hockey
    with players of similar ability at a higher level
    than in-house, park, or recreational hockey
    programs. 
  • To provide our youth hockey players with the
    fundamental skills and understanding of the game
    so that they can continue to effectively compete
    as they advance through the older age levels.
  • A Building Approach
  • Introductory programs focus on skating
    instruction and fundamentals in a fun environment
    that builds interest and confidence in young
    players, while preparing them to advance to the
    older groups.

Where We Skate
  • Ice time for practices and games is at ice arenas
    located in the Minneapolis metro area.
  • Home Arena Parade Ice Garden
  • Victory Memorial, Edison, Minnehaha, Augsburg and
    University Of Minnesotas Ridder and Mariucci
    Arenas
  • Games scrimmages are played with teams in
    District 1, as well as outside the District (for
    Squirt and above).
  • Ice time averages
  • Mites 2-3 times per week
  • Squirts 3-4 times per week
  • Peewee 4-5 times per week
  • Bantams 5-6 times per week
  • Fees are set according to frequency of ice time
    for each age

Tryouts Process
  • Hockey Director Scott Bell, head coach for Boys
    Hockey Program at Hamline
  • Runs tryouts
  • Reports to President of WAHA Board of Directors
  • Assembles Evaluation Team
  • For each age level there are 5 tryout sessions
  • Skaters evaluated on skating, passing,
    competitive drills and scrimmage games using 1-6
    scale
  • Skaters receiving
  • 5-6 rating A team
  • 4-5 rating B team
  • 1, 2 or 3 rating C team
  • Coach, Hockey Director and Independent Evaluator
    input for ability-appropriate placement of
  • Mite U8
  • Hockey Director and Independent Evaluators input
    for ability-appropriate placement of
  • Squirt U10, Peewee U12, Bantam U14 Levels

Coach Selection
  • Best available coaches from outside association
    and parent volunteers.

  • Parents wanting to coach need to submit paperwork
    by Sept. 16 to Scott Bell, Hockey Director

  • Forms include Criminal Background Checks
  • Multiple coach candidates undergo Selection
    Committee review.
  • All coaches must have coaching card and attend
    mandatory coach clinic.

  • Membership fees
  • Aligned with other comparable associations.

    in all Minnesota Hockey programs.

  • All donations to WAHA by businesses or personal
    are tax deductible.
  • Consider us in your annual giving.
  • Charitable gambling
  • Pull tab sales/revenue directly pays for ice
    time/other allowable expenses.
  • Helps WAHA deliver 10-15 reduction in membership
    fee.
  • 3 booths and 3 machines in local bars.
  • Hennepin County Smoking Ban poses challenges for
    WAHA and other local hockey associations that
    rely on charitable gambling

  • A network of 20 local businesses in Washburn
    area
  • Restaurants Coffee shops

  • Offering the stuff you buy often
  • Businesses pay in-network fee of 100 to WAHA
    to be in our network.
  • Weve raised 2,000!
  • You frequent their businesses/buy from them
  • Sept. Dec. program.
  • At registration, youll received a bag of 20
    hockey pucks and directory of businesses by
    category
  • To do your part, you must use up all the hockey
    pucks.
  • Identify yourself by leaving a puck when you
    visit/buy from businesses.
  • Businesses track WAHA traffic by retaining pucks
    on monthly basis.
  • Alternative door to door food sales ?
  • Win-Win Program
  • WAHA raises needed funds.
  • Local businesses increase sales.
  • Tighter ties to local businesses and the local
    Youth Hockey Association.

Schwans Food Sales Program
  • Program run Sept. 6 Oct. 7.
  • Offered to help reduce membership fees for
    families that wish to pursue this program.
  • Sell Schwans Food to neighbors, friends.
  • Sell door to door or promote and have friends
    family shop online
  • Schwans ships food out of state!
  • Submit sales info. to Schwans they do the
    rest.
  • WAHA receives .30 for every 1 of food sold by
    WAHA families.
  • Money raised is directly applied to family member
    fee.

HEP/Fair Play
  • WAHA follows Hockey Education Program (HEP)
  • Formed in 2004 in response to increased
    aggression and violence in youth hockey, as well
    as inappropriate behavior on the part of parents
    and coaches, resulting in attrition of coaches,
    officials, and players.
  • Program intent make youth hockey a fun
    experience and develop more highly skilled hockey
    players
  • Fair Play Points
  • Points earned by teams to drive Fair Play
    behavior.
  • Incents accountability and respect among players,
    coaches, parents and officials.
  • All involved expected to control behavior and
    emotions.
  • Points earned
  • Penalty minutes do not exceed Fair Play
    threshold.
  • Spectator conduct not abusive.
  • No coach misconduct.
  • Performance Fair Play Winner!
