Main Idea
This story is about a boy named Bud searching
for his father.
  • Bud goes to the Amos's house because they adopted
    him.
  • Buds friend Bugs comes and finds him and they go
    to Hooverville
  • Bud misses the train to Chicago and decides to go
    look for his dad in Grand Rapides.
  • On his way to find his dad Bud meets Mr. Lewis in
    Owosso, Michigan.
  • Bud tells Mr. Lewis his dad is Herman E.
    Calloway. Mr. Lewis offers to take Bud home.
  • Bud finds Herman but it turns out that Hermans
    not his father hes Buds grandfather.

  • Bud got taken from the home to the Amos's
    house.
  • The Amoss locked Bud in their shed.
  • Bud went to the mission to get some food. While
    he was there he got a pretend family.

  • Bud got taken to his dad Herman E. Calloway by
    Mr. Lewis.
  • Herman E. Calloway is not Buds father hes Buds
    grandfather.

Setting
Bud and Bugs get to Hooverville. When they get
there they come to realize that Hooverville is
cardboard jungle. It is the kind of city that
will depress you. The that live in Hooverville
are there because they lost their jobs and this
is the only place they can afford to live.
Hooverville is made up of a bunch of big boxes
that people use for their house. In Hooverville
there are four fires. One really big one, and
three smaller ones. There is at least one
Hooverville in every single state .

Character Description
  • Bud Bud is black, he is age 11. He is kind of
    tall. Bud is nice, caring, and friendly. Bud is
    the main character in this story. He is looking
    for his father.
  • Herman E. Calloway He is black like Bud, tall,
    and kind of old. Herman is very mean, unkind,
    unfriendly, and he really doesn't like people. In
    this story Bud thinks Herman is his father. That
    I can tell you is not true. Herman E. Calloway is
    Buds grandfather.
  • Bugs Bugs is age 11, short, and Bugs is black.
    Bugs is always kind to others, brave, and has
    good ideas. Bugs is one of Buds close personal
    friends. He helps Bud get to Hooverville. He also
    wants to help Bud get on the train. Bud misses
    the train.

The Great Depression
  • The Great Depression was an economical slump in
    the United States and Europe that began in 1929
    and ended in 1939.
  • A lot of families gad little to no food during
    the Great Depression because so many people were
    being laid off of their jobs.
  • A lot of families had to move into cramped
    apartment buildings or to one of the many
    Hoovervilles because they were not able to afford
    there houses.
  • Many families sent letters to Eleanor Roosevelt
    asking for food money and clothing. She could not
    help as many people as she hoped to.
  • At one time people believed that it was a wrong
    to get financial help from someone. Boy did the
    Great Depression change all that!!!!
