2I have always loved the ocean.
Here I am at Kitsilano beach in 1978.
I started ocean swimming in 2006
3Ocean swimming is
- An excellent cardiovascular workout
- A low-impact sport good for all ages and sizes
- Convenient if you live by the sea
- Cheap and exciting
- Something to do
4Precautions should be taken, though
5- Beware of
- Boats and freighters
- Rip tides and currents
- Hypothermia
- Bacterial colonies
- Enemy animals
- Deadwood, flotsam and jetsam
6Your First Step is to Buy a Wetsuit
- Choose a triathlon-style wetsuit made of thin
neoprene - New suits cost between 300 and 600
- Suits offer a layer of buoyancy and reduce
drowning - Trying one on might be your most unpleasant
shopping experience yet
7Trying on a wetsuit on is like
- Trying to squeeze a squirrel into a balloon
- It takes about 15 minutes to try it on
- Expect to lose one litre of water through
perspiration - Many people will be pinching you to ensure a
proper fit - You might become stuck in it
8Next Step Find a group to swim with, such as
VOWSA
- VOWSA stands for the Vancouver Open Water Swim
Association - You should be comfortable swimming 1 km non-stop
before joining - Click here for more information VOWSA
9- VOWSA practices weekly at Kitsilano Beach
While youre there, why not soak up a little
beach time?

11The best part of ocean swimming
You get to leave the city for awhile and float
around in the Port of Vancouver
12The Port of Vancouver is also the industrial
sublime
13For example, the Port of Vancouver is home to a
reduction plant

Reduction plant
15Not everyone has the option of returning to the
sea.
