Title: How Nanotechnology is Becoming NanoBUSINESS

1
How Nanotechnology is Becoming NanoBUSINESS
2
About the NanoBusiness Alliance
  • The NanoBusiness Alliance is the first
industry association founded to advance the
    emerging business of nanotechnology. The
Alliances mission is to create a collective
voice for the advancing small tech industry and
develop a range of initiatives to support and
    strengthen the nanotechnology business community

3
What the Alliance Does
  • Research and Education
  • Public Awareness
  • Public Policy
  • Briefings/Panels/Conferences
  • Industry Support

4
Alliance Facts
  • Founded in October 2001, by Mark Modzelewski,
Nathan Tinker and Josh Wolfe of Lux Capital
  • Over 250 Members -- Corporations start-ups
    universities vcs government agencies service
    industry firms and non-profits
  • Advisory Board led by former House Speaker Newt
Gingrich and famed venture capitalist Steve
Jurvetson. The Board also includes former
Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater, Mike Roco
of the NNI, GEs Scott Donnelly, Stan Williams of
HP, former House Science Committee Chairman Bob
Walker, and 20 other leaders from the nanotech
    field.
  • Partnerships with Penton Media, Deloitte
Touche, New Vantage Group, NIAC, and others
  • Hubs and affiliates in the EU, Canada, Israel,
    New York, Colorado, Massachusetts, Michigan,
    Silicon Valley, and Washington DC

5
Nanotechnology The Next Industrial Revolution
  • Nanotechnology will effect almost every aspect of
our lives from the medicines we take to
computers we use to the energy supplies we
require to the food we eat to the cars we
drive to the buildings we live in to the
    clothes we wear
  • For every area where we can imagine the impact of
nanotech, there will be others no one has yet
thought of new capabilities, new products, and
    new markets
  • Nanotechnology revenues are expected to reach
    over 200 billion by 2006
  • NSF predicts a 1 Trillion global market for
nanotechology in little over a decade

6
Key Trends
  • Significant government funding US and across
    the world
  • Rapid development of academic programs
  • Over 40 nanotechnology programs across US vs.
    80-100
  • abroad
  • International students are the vast majority of
    US university nano-grad students
  • The only area of venture capital that is still
    growing anywhere
  • from 450-750 million in funding last year
  • Major Nanotechnology RD Efforts at IBM, HP, GE,
    Mitsubishi, ChevronTexaco, Samsung,
    DaimlerChrysler, and other global brands
  • Over 1, 200 nanotech start-ups in the US vs.
    250-350 abroad

7
How Much Is In The Market.
March 1, 2003 Tokyo. Over 300 companies and 20
governments are on hand to show off their current
products and efforts 25,000 people came to watch

12
Nanotechnology Across the World
13
National Nanotechnology Initiative
  • Launched in 2000 by President Clinton
  • POTUS initiative marshalling resources of the
    agencies
  • Central source to evaluate, research and promote
nanotechnology almost entirely through the US
    university system
  • 2003 budget 710 million
  • New legislation proposed by the Alliance and
Congress calls for a nearly 500 increase in
    funding
  • Biggest success told the world that nanotech is
    real

14
Importance of Government
  • Government role at this nascent stage in the
development of nanobusiness cant be emphasized
    enough
  • Basic Research
  • Funding Support
  • RD
  • Purchasing/Contracting
  • Death Valley
  • Promotion
  • Market and competitive analysis
  • Marshalling resources

15
U.S Competitiveness
  • While most would concur that the US is leading in
nanotechnology, unlike past waves of innovation,
nanotechnology is not dominated by the United
    States
  • While many US companies are entering the
nanotechnology field this is a recent
    development
  • Most US nanotechnology IP lies dormant
  • By some accounts, the EU is spending nearly
double the US on nanotechnology research and
    development at the government level
  • EU based corporations are aggressively moving
    into nanotechnology
  • South Korea, China, Canada, Israel, Switzerland,
Australia and others are developing similar
    initiative to the NNI
  • Nanotechnology research is happening in over 50
nations with more focusing on it as a source of
    economic potential every day

What the Industry Needs from Government
  • Pass the new nanotech bills
  • Get real numbers for the US and abroad
  • Develop the nano workforce of tomorrow
  • Find programs to get start-ups through the
    valley of death
  • Establish a nanobusiness portal
  • Fix the US tech transfer system
  • Make USPTO more knowledgeable and push for
    fairness internationally
  • Give states the tools to develop nanotech
    clusters
  • Engage the public now in a discussion on the
environmental, social and business impacts of nano
