7NIEDZWIEDZ
Niedzwiedz Parish in Polish called Gmina is
situated in the southern part of Limanowa
District on northern slopes of the Gorce Range in
the Beskid Wyspowy Mountains. The whole area
stretches over the Gorce Mountains with a large
part within Gorce National Park. Niedzwiedz
Parish includes only four villages Poreba
Wielka, Konina, Podobin and Niedzwiedz.
8POREBA WIELKA
Starting from Poreba Wielka village one can make
beautiful walks and excursions up the Gorce
Mountains- with its highest peak Turbacz (1310
m)? Magnificent scenery from the top of
Turbacz panorama view of the Tatry and Pieniny
Mountains. Clean air, microclimate and thick
forest are considered the greatest assets of the
region.
9In Poreba Wielka you can visit the museum of
Wladyslaw Orkan. Our school was named Wladyslaw
Orkans in memory of this famous Polish writer
who was born there in the late 19th century.

Our school is a mixed comprehensive with just
over 300 pupils and 30 teachers. The school is
divided into Primary for 6-12-year-old children
and Gymnasium for 13-16-year-old children.

THE LAJKONIK FESTIVITIES
Annually, every first Thursday
following Corpus Christi day, in the Market
Place the Lajkonik Parade is held to
commemorate Poland's victory over the Tatars, in
1241. Some men are dressed in the traditional
Cracovia folklore dress while others are adorned
by oriental garments and hold horse-tail insignia
in their hands. The hero of the festivity -
Lajkonik -dressed in Tartar 'disguise' rides a
hobby horse through the streets of Krakow.
12FLOATING OF THE WREATHS
Every year on St. John the Baptist's Day and
Wanda's name day (June 23-24) the tradition of
Wreaths is celebrated along the Vistula River
banks at the foot of Wawel Hill. Annually,
this event gathers enormous numbers of Cracovians
and guests between Wawel and the Debnicki Bridge.
The genesis of this tradition is ancient and a
sum of three customs Sobótka, bonfires
traditionally lit by country folk on Midsummer
Day, the search for the magical fern flower and a
commemoration of Wanda - legendary daughter of
Krakus.
13THE CRIBS EXHIBITION
During the first ten days of December a lot of
Cracovian crib makers surround the statue of
Adam Mickiewicz at the Main Square to present
dozens of cribs. Some of their cribs are small,
some are huge. After a bugle-call at 12.00 they
move to Historical Museum, which organize the
competition to the best Christmas crib.
14THE BUGLE CALL
Every hour on the hour, a bugle is played from
the top of St. Mary's Church tower. This bugle
call is transmitted by Polish Radio at midday,
every day. In the past, the bugle player
announced the opening and closing of the city
gateways. From 2nd of April 2005 (the John Paul
II death) every first Saturday of month fireman
plays a song The Barge the favorite song of
our Pope.
15THE ENCHANTED CABBY
This single, horse-drawn cabs officially
appeared on the streets of Krakow in March 1855.
From the Main Square you may employ the cab and
go for a tour around the city centre.
16The Mystery of the Passion
Anually, at Easter time, during the Holy Week
in March or April in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska The
Mystery of the Passion takes place.
17Niedzicaa beautiful little 14th-century castle
The castle in Niedzica is considered
one of the best historical defensive structures
in Poland. The castle is lodged on top of a
cliff that plummets down to the Dunajec Reservoir.
18Folkfest - Highlanders

- 'Gorcanie' from Niedzwiedz is the most popular
- highland group in our local community.
- They dance, play music and sing traditional
songs. - They travel around Europe and introduce
- our tradition and custmos.
