    real-time diagnostic images of organs as they

  • 1999 Developed first blood test to detect the
    enzyme telomerase, which can indicate the early
    spread of lung cancer
  • 2000 Developed an edible vaccine in the form of a
    genetically engineered potato that delivers
    protection against E. coli, a common cause of
    fatal diarrhea in children around the world

    that existing smallpox vaccine can be diluted in
    order to drastically increase the number of
    available doses
  • 2005 First in the U.S. to combine
    minimally-invasive heart bypass surgery and

  • 2006 Discovered that the effectiveness of beta
    blockers in patients with chronic heart failure
    depends on the genetic makeup of receptors in
    the heart
  • 2006 Discovered a fat hormone called omentin that
    may explain the link between obesity and a
    persons likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes

    cells, a tool to track brain cell metabolic
    changes related to aging and diseases such as
    Alzheimers, Parkinsons and Huntingtons
  • 2007 Discovered that cocaine exposure in an
    animal model causes permanent damage to a
    part of the brain responsible for judgment
    and learning new behaviors
