How can artists help us understand and advance
the interface between the HUMAN and the MACHINE
READABLE?
- Identity construction - playing with the possible
- Critical projects - expose operations of power
- Social projects - build new worlds
3Drew Hemment Digital Identity Forum
Identity is "not the label individuals choose
to be known by in any particular context."

Identity is "not the label individuals choose
to be known by in any particular context."
Base indexical and economic
relations Superstructure cultural expression of
those relations A Marxist in our midst!
5Drew Hemment Digital Identity Forum
Digital Identity Identity is socially
constructed. Individuals take on a plurality of
fluid identities that are rarely fixed or stable.
These operate economically as well as
culturally. Authentication works for a specific
set of problems and contexts. To confuse the two
is to misunderstands the possibilities for
computer-human interaction. We owe it to
ourselves to build better visions.
6Cyborgs are constructs too

Critical Projects - Concerns New authentication
systems are marketed as secure and closed,
whereas databases are insecure and unstable.
There is a groundswell of people for whom these
are very real, not abstract, issues - Oyster
Card. Face up to privacy now or lose client
base tomorrow - ignore it at your peril. Hard
Privacy Measured by intrusive and objective
harm. Soft Privacy Hard to quantify, to do with
the way that dark alleys are sites of
creativity and difference.

Social Projects - Local and community identity A
DIY culture has grown up around people developing
creative and social applications of mobile and
wireless media. This is largely a gift economy,
with code and ideas circulating between informal
networks and interest groups. Locative media -
putting a sense of place back into cyberspace
Developing creative and social projects. How to
embed values developed in the community within
software and engineering projects? (This is not
the same as trawling the arts and community
projects for design concepts!) Shared ownership
leads to acceptance and trust. How can grass
roots initiatives scale up?
18Pervasive and Locative Arts Network (PLAN) A
new international and interdisciplinary research
network in pervasive media and locative
media. Brings together practicing artists,
technology developers and social scientists,
drawn from academic research labs, industry and
informal practitioner networks. Funded as part
of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research
Council (EPSRC) Culture Creativity programme.
First event ICA. London 1st 2nd February
2005 An initial workshop to launch the network
and assess the state of the art. http//www.open-
plan.org (live December 1st, 2004)
19Pervasive and Locative Arts Network (PLAN) Core
aims Clarify and deepen the research agenda for
this area, by opening up a variety of research
questions. Build a broader inter-disciplinary
research community. Build consortia for future
collaborative projects. Network the
networks. Inform international research,
development, policy and funding agendas.
