Title: Endangered Species

1
Endangered Species
From all Around the World
Created for Miss Valensky's 5th grade class
2
What does endangered mean?
  • Endangered means that the animal is in jeopardy
of dying out as a species
  • When a species of animal completely dies out,
they become extinct, never to live again
  • Being endangered means that more and more animals
are dying and less and less are being born

3
How does a species become endangered?
  • Habitat changes
  • People moving into habitat of animals
  • Land being taken over for farming
  • Land and habitats are changed from pollution
  • Climate altered by release of greenhouse gases

4
How does a species become endangered?
  • Overexploitation
  • Due to industry, some animals were hunted
excessively and from this became endangered
  • Animals are being used quicker than they can
    reproduce
  • Poaching has played a major role in exploitation

5
What are some endangered animals?
6
Ten Endangered Species
  • Blue Whale
  • Tiger
  • Chinese Paddlefish
  • Giant Panda
  • Western Gorilla
  • Hawaiian Crow
  • Snow Leopard
  • African Elephant
  • Whooping Crane
  • Black Rhinoceros

7
Blue Whale
  • Males grow to be 82 long and females reach up to
    84 long
  • The blue whale can weigh up to 285,000 pounds
  • Classified as an endangered species because there
has been a 50 decrease in numbers in the past
    years
  • Caused by an abundance of whales
  • It is the largest mammal on earth yet it eats the
    smallest marine life, planktons

8
Tiger
  • Male tiger grows up to ten feet long and weighs
    almost 600 lbs.
  • Considered endangered because of a decrease in
the population of 50 in the past three
    generations
  • Caused by lack of area for occupancy and
    exploitation
  • Consists of eight subspecies, distinguishable by
    their coat color

9
Chinese Paddlefish
  • Classified as a critically endangered species
  • Projected to have an estimated reduction of 80
    in the next ten years
  • Caused by exploitation and a major decline in
    areas

10
Giant Panda
  • Male stands 5 tall and weighs up to 270 lbs.
  • Severely endangered
  • Only 250 mature adults exist
  • Caused by a decline in the area of habitat
  • Feeds mainly on bamboo
  • Classified as a carnivore though it is a herbivore

11
Western Gorilla
  • Male reaches 6 tall and weighs almost 600 lbs.
  • Projected decline in population to reach up to
    50
  • Caused by exploitation and lack of area to live
    in
  • It is the largest and strongest primate, but also
the most gentle natured as well

12
Hawaiian Crow
  • Critically endangered
  • Only 50 mature Hawaiian crows alive today
  • Caused by a lack of quality habitats and a major
    lack of livable area
  • Located in Hawaii

13
Snow Leopard
  • Found in Eastern Asia
  • Estimated population of no more than 2500 snow
    leopards are alive today
  • There is no group larger than 250 adult leopards
    living in one area
  • Dispersed throughout the eastern part of the
    continent

14
African Elephant
  • Reaches 10 tall and weighs up to 10,000 lbs.
  • Over the last three generations there has been a
decline in the population by 50
  • This is caused by a lack in area
  • Poaching elephants also plays a role, they are
    coveted for their ivory tusks

15
Whooping Crane
  • Found in Canada and the United States
  • Seriously endangered, population is at less than
    250 mature cranes
  • Caused by a lack of habitat

16
Black Rhinoceros
  • Grows up to 3 long and 6 high
  • Weighs up to 3,000 lbs
  • Critically endangered species to due a reduction
of 80 in the past three generations
  • Caused by lack of habitat, an abundance in
population and a lack of livable area
  • Most aggressive in the rhino family
  • Can charge up to 30 mph

17
What can we do to make sure that these animals
dont become extinct?
  • Conserve habitats
  • Make space for wildlife
  • Recycle, reduce, and reuse
  • Plant native plants in an area
  • Control the introduction of plants and animals
  • Join an organization
  • Make your voice heard
