The Camelot Years
  • The era of Kennedys administration became known
as the Camelot Years for its grace, elegance, and
wit. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, gave
special recognition to American art and culture
by inviting artists, musicians, and celebrities
    to the White House.

The Promise of Progress
  • Kennedy had a broad vision of progress that he
hoped to turn into a legislative agenda called
the New Frontier. However, he had a difficult
time turning his promise of a New Frontier into a
reality. He hoped to provide medical care to the
aged, rebuild urban areas, and aid education, but
he didnt have the support of Congress.

The Promise of Progress
  • To further prevent anything from going through
Congress, Kennedy also lacked a popular mandate
a clear indication that the voters approved of
    his plans.
  • However, he did make some progress in certain
    key areas

Tragedy in Dallas
  • On November 22, 1963 in Dallas, TX, President
Kennedy, his wife, the Governor John Connally and
his wife were riding in a limousine through
downtown. Suddenly, shots rang out and JFK was
shot in the head. He died an hour later after
    having been shot.

Tragedy in Dallas
  • The news of Kennedys death quickly spread
around the U.S. and the world. Over the next
four days, America remained glued to the TV
watching as Lyndon Johnson was sworn in as
president, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested, and
the funeral. The American public also watched as
Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby.

Tragedy in Dallas
  • The entire sequence of events was chaotic and
shocking. The assassination of Kennedy left many
    questioning Oswalds involvement. To investigate
the events, the Warren Commission interviewed and
studied the assassination but concluded that
Kennedy had been shot by Oswald, who had been
    acting alone.

Tragedy in Dallas
  • Other studies found varying results but overall,
the assassination did prove to the public that
our government system could survive such a
    tragedy.
