Title: What the students said

1
What the students said
  • 2006

2
In 2006
  • 74 of Endon High School students achieved 5 or
    more A-C grades.
  • We expect our Year 11 pupils this year to achieve
    81

3
  • Congratulations 2006!!!

4
  • When the 2006 results came out, Mrs White
analysed the results and contacted 45 students to
    ask them

5
What was the secret of your success?
6
  • The 45 students selected were those who had
achieved between 0-6 A-C grades in the mock
examinations, and had raised this by 4 or more in
their actual exams, six months later.

7
We asked them..
  • Tell us honestly-
  • How did you make your improvement?

8
When students have left
  • They are not afraid to speak openly
  • They have matured
  • They have been through a very stressful
    experience!
  • This is what they said.

9
  • Work hard, concentrate in lessons, think of
your future and set yourself targets
  • Ben Stanley

10
  • I feel that the fact that Mrs Stubbs suggested
a check for dyslexia resulted in my being given
extra time to assimilate my thoughts and complete
    my work.
  • Joe Johnson

11
  • I revised for two hours every day, three
subjects each day. Also, I made sure that my
coursework was of a good standard.
    Phoebe Beynon

12
  • Do lots of revision and go to all of the
revision sessions, as they helped me to remember
some stuff that I had forgotten.
  • Joe Lawton

13
  • Work Hard
  • Use short study sessions
  • Good organisation
  • Phil Lovatt

14
Three pupils came into school
  • They spent about an hour with Mrs White, Mrs
    Preece and Mrs Roscoe.
  • They said a great deal about what had helped them
    to achieve success..

15
  • I was sent to my nans house to get my work
done. She had been a teacher and gave me one- to-
    one help.
  • My brother tutored me. I tried with my sister,
    but that didnt work.

16
  • Listen to what the colleges say in your college
interview. It was a motivator for me and gave me
    some career prospects.
  • I wish Id started working earlier

17
  • It was only when my parent s got involved that
I really got down to work. Before then, I just
    kept putting it off!

18
  • Staying in school to do revision is better than
    study leave.
  • I found going over everything again, with
someone, when I didnt get it helped me.

19
  • The hardest subjects to catch up when you are
away are Food, Maths and Science.
  • I found SAM learning good for Maths.

20
What teachers say
  • I was told by some teachers that I wasnt going
to get the grades I wanted. I was out to prove
    the teacher wrong!
  • Teachers give you confidence when they say,
You will pass! They made people believe they
    could do it.

21
  • Your friends say they are not revising. But
    you know they are!
  • We knew the teachers were right, but we didnt
want to take it in. Finally, you have to accept
what they are saying is true.

22
Revision techniques
  • One-to-one tutoring
  • Learning exam technique
  • Testing- areas of weakness
  • Spider diagrams
  • Know yourself- revise alone or study buddy?
  • Manageable chunks of revision
  • Science/Geography revision guides
  • Geography case studies- school intranet
  • Highlight texts
  • Write in exercise books
  • Highlight words/colours

23
School Strategies
  • Contacting home about coursework had an effect
  • Checklists of content helped
  • Mock results day gave confidence
  • Revision sessions give a good overview of a paper
  • Coursework catch up helped
  • In focus groups you hear other peoples
    experiences
  • Getting colleges in school helped you to set
    target grades

24
Future developments
  • One strategy they suggested was telling the
teacher the areas they felt most weak in, and
having a specific revision session to go over
    that topic.
  • We hope to introduce this, to help you achieve,
    this year.

25
You have it from the experts!
  • Now, its over to you..
