  • Annual campaigns can effectively reinforce the
    earthquake preparedness information.
  • Repetition Habit. We want these precautions to
    be habits.

  • WE SHOULD SAY WHEN A DAMAGING EARTHQUAKE
    OCCURS, WE NEED TO BE PREPARED!

PREPAREDNESS MEASURES
  • Measures taken before an earthquake can reduce or
    eliminate loss of life, injuries and property
    damage.
  • An important step is to survey your home for
    possible hazards.
  • Take action to lessen those hazards.
  • Prepare an emergency supply kit.
  • Make a plan with family and neighbors.

THE HAZARD HUNT
  • Place heavy objects on low shelves
  • Move bed away from windows and remove heavy
    mirrors or pictures from above.
  • Make sure doorways, halls and exits are clear of
    clutter.

MORE HAZARD HUNTING
  • Add latches to cabinets and drawers.
  • Put security lights in each room.
  • Install smoke detectors and replace batteries.
  • Secure heavy furniture, appliances, hanging
    plants and water heater.
  • Secure anything that can move, break or fall when
    your house starts to shake.

IDENTIFY SAFE SPOTS
  • Strong, supported doorway
  • Under sturdy table or desk
  • Inside corner of the house
  • The hallway is good spot!

IDENTIFY DANGER ZONES
  • Stay away from windows.
  • Stay clear of large bookcases or cabinets.
  • Stay away from kitchen.
  • Stay away from garage.

Preparedness for those who need extra help
  • Find a couple of buddies who can check on you
    after an earthquake.
  • Make a list of medications, allergies and special
    equipment.
  • Teach your buddy how to operate any special
    equipment.
  • Give your buddy a spare house key.

ORGANIZE YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD
  • Everyone should have a plan.
  • Inventory your neighborhood skills and
    resources.
  • Medical, electrical, child care, leadership,
    firefighting and survival skills.
  • Own chain saws, citizen band radios, 4-wheel
    drive vehicles, motorcycles, water purifiers.
  • Assign appropriate jobs to each individual.

  • Prepare a kit for your family at home.
  • Prepare a kit for your car.
  • Prepare a kit for your business.
  • Refresh and replace supplies every 6 months.

SAFETY DURING AN EARTHQUAKEDuck, Cover Hold
  • No matter where you are, know how to protect
    yourself.
  • Practice by physically placing yourself in the
    safe locations you have chosen. This is
    important for children and wheelchair bound.
  • Duck down on the floor, take cover under a sturdy
    table, hold on!

WHERE ARE YOU WHEN THE SHAKING STARTS?
  • If in bed, stay there and cover your head.
  • If standing, sit down so you wont fall down.
  • If in the kitchen, turn off appliances and take
    cover.
  • If outside, move away from buildings, wires, and
    windows.
  • If driving, pull over and avoid overpasses and
    power lines.
  • If in a store, move away from shelves.
  • If in a stadium or theater, stay in your seat,
    duck down, cover your head.

AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE
  • Check for injuries.
  • Check for gas and water leaks.
  • Check for damage.
  • Turn on your portable radio and listen for
    instructions.
  • If you evacuate, leave a note telling family
    members where you can be found.

UTILITY HAZARDS
  • Only turn off the gas if you determine there is a
    leak. You may smell or hear escaping gas.
  • Do not light matches or candles to look for
    leaks.
  • Turn off electricity if damage occurred.
  • Turn off water if damage occurred.
