The Great Southern California ShakeOut
  • The largest earthquake drill in U.S. history,
    organized to inspire Southern Californians to get
    ready for big earthquakes, and to prevent
    disasters from becoming catastrophes.
  • Everyone is strongly encouraged to participate
    schools, businesses, individuals, emergency
    responders, etc.

The Scenario
  • In the scenario, a catastrophic magnitude 7.8
    earthquake will hit the San Andreas fault on
    Thursday, November 13, 2008, at 1000 a.m.
  • The epicenter will be Bombay Beach in Imperial
    County
  • Rupture zone to Lake Hughes in Los Angeles County
    (approx. 200 miles)

The Scenario
  • Its not if an earthquake of this size will
    happenbut when. Its very likely that it will
    happen in our lifetime.
  • In an earthquake of this size, the shaking will
    last for nearly two minutes.

  • Make sure you and your loved ones are ready

  • Review it with Students and Staff
  • Review it with Parents
  • Develop a drill that will allow everyone to
    practice their roles and responsibilities

  • What will Imperial County Schools be doing to
    prepare for
  • November 13, 2008?

County-wide drill
  • The County of Imperial will be holding a
    functional earthquake exercise on May 14, 2008,
    to prepare for the big one in November.
  • All public agencies will be participating
  • Schedule practice drills and exercise
    communication!

Beginning October 1
  • Schools Safety Committee should meet to review
    the Safe School Plan.
  • Schools should review with teachers
  • Safe School Plan
  • SEMS Assignments (NIMS)
  • CA Government Code Section 3100
  • All public employees are hereby declared to be
    disaster service workers

  • Schools will review with parents
  • Schools Safe School Plan
  • Drill information
  • The Field Act Facilities

  • Schools need to check their emergency supply
    cache (on a regular basis)
  • 3 days of water
  • First Aid Supplies
  • Search and Rescue Supplies
  • Food supplies (in cafeteria)

    equipment

By November 1
  • Parents should have a letter informing them about
    the drill and inviting them to attend.
  • Teachers should have reviewed their assignment
    for emergencies.
  • Emergency supplies should be current and all
    communications gear checked.

On November 13
  • All schools should practice their response to a
    major earthquake.
  • Drop, Cover and Hold! (1000 a.m.)
  • Evacuation and activation of school emergency
    teams
  • All District radio and communication systems will
    be tested.
  • The ICOE will open the DEOC and conduct a drill
    based on the Golden Guardian scenario.
