CONGO-TANZANIA EARTHQUAKE

• The East African Rift System is an approximately
  35-mile-wide zone of active volcanics and
  faulting that extends north-south in eastern
  Africa for more than 1,860 miles from Ethiopia in
  the north to Zambezi in the south.
• It is a rare example of an active continental
  rift zone, where a continental plate is
  attempting to split into two diverging plates.

CONGO-TANZANIA EARTHQUAKE

• The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a
  magnitude 6.8 magnitude quake with a depth of 10
  km (6 miles) struck near the town of Kalemie in
  the Democratic Republic of Congo at 319 p.m.
• Kalemie is located about 35 km from the
  epicenter, which is about 600 miles southwest of
  Nairobi.

• At present, no deaths or injuries have been
  reported in Kalemie, an eastern Congolese town on
  the shores of Lake Tanganyika with a population
  of 200,000 people.
